Coalition offering grain handling safety training
MOUNT CARMEL - The Illinois Farm Bureau (IFB), County Farm Bureaus, and the Grain Handling Safety Coalition (GHSC) are partnering to provide grain handling safety training for farmers, farm employees, and commercial operators.

The training is meant to help farmers and employees identify, avoid and eliminate the hazards of handling grain, according to Lawrence County Farm Bureau Manager Tyler Harvey.

Harvey noted that a local training opportunity has been organized by the Clay, Crawford, Edwards, Lawrence, Richland, Wabash, Wayne, and White County Farm Bureaus, with assistance from the Wabash Valley College and Wabash Valley Service Company. The training will be March 18 at the Wabash Valley College in Mount Carmel from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Lunch will be provided.

The training is being made available through a grant given to the GHSC, and a partnership between the County Farm Bureaus and WVC Agriculture Department. To receive the grant, County Farm Bureaus were required to form a partnership with other community organizations, be willing to host and sponsor the event, and choose the topics to be covered.

"Illinois had the largest increase of off-farm storage capacity in 2011 and more than 10 percent of the national on-farm storage capacity," said Bob Aherin, program leader, University of Illinois Extension Agriculture Safety and Health. "Engulfment and entrapment are on the rise nationwide, which is why these grain safety training programs are so important."

The grain handling safety training will include an overview of grain handling as well as grain bin entry and extraction. The training will include hands-on and classroom instruction.

Registration is required. To register, call the Lawrence County Farm Bureau office at 943-4233.
