Rain doesn't stop SI Classic runners
LAWRENCEVILLE - Saturday's fourth annual Southern Illinois Classic, the major fund-raiser for Kids Shopping Day of Lawrence County, was a success, despite the races beginning in a cold drizzle.

Most of the runners who registered for the race participated in the fund-raiser which, according to organizers, raised a whopping $21,000 - $3,000 more than a year ago.

Kids Shopping Day of Lawrence County is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the children of Lawrence County.

Each year in August, children county-wide are invited to a one-day event during which they receive everything they need to start their school year off right; clothes, shoes, toiletries, school supplies, backpacks and more.

Seventy-four runners, between the ages of 19 and 66 competed in the half-marathon with Lawrenceville's Todd Reller winning the event.

The 51-year-old Reller finished the 13.1-mile course in 1:22.05, two minutes ahead of 31-year-old Jason Howell, who was second with a time of 1:24.07.

Third place went to Matthew Barker, 45, Lawrenceville, in 1:29.07. Jerrod Smith, 34, Evansville, Ind., finishing fourth in 1:34.13. Joel Parsons, 37, Olney, was fifth in 1:36.44.

In the female division, Carissa Montgomery, 31, of Evansville, was the winner in 1:49.45. She finished 14th overall.

Fifth place in the female division went to Heather Leiman, 42, Carlinville, in 2:05.07.

In the 5k (3.1 miles) race, where 97 runners competed, 14-year-old Lawrenceville runner Jack Holden won in 20:54.

Chandler Bouillet, 20, was second in 22:15 with Conner McKinney, a 13-year-old from Sumner, finishing third in 22:51.

Eric Erickson, 45, was fourth in 23:31 with Kaitlyn McKinney, 21, Bridgeport, finishing fifth in 24:05. Steve Morris, 45, Poseyville, Ind., was sixth overall and the fifth in the male division to cross the finish line.

McKinney was also the female division winner.

Shelby McKinney, 21, Lawrenceville, was second in the female division and seventh overall with a finish in 24:18.

Angie Moore, 43, Lawrenceville, was third in the female division in 25:59 with 10-year-old daughter, Katie Moore, crossing the finishing line at practically the same time in 25:59.8.

Fifth in the female division was 19-year-old Meredith Spitz, of Sumner, who turned in a time of 26:24.

According to registration records, runners in the 5k ranged in age from 9-years-old to 60.

The races started at Parkside Elementary School and ended on Ed Loeb Field, located behind Parkside.

There was also a kids half-marathon.

Organizers said they were thrilled with the participation and with the volunteers who helped make the event a success. It is estimated that between Friday night registration, the Saturday pancake breakfast and the runs, about 100 volunteers answered the call.

"We want to thank all the volunteers, including the Rotary Club and runners/walkers who braved the weather to make the event a success," Bob and Sue Seber, coordinators of the event, said.   "This is truly a county-wide event involving many civic organizations, churches, youth and school groups.  Without their help, it would not have been possible."

In 2013, 627 students in Lawrence County participated in the August Kids Shopping Day event. This year's Kids Shopping Day is Aug. 2.
