Daily Record welcomes new staff writer
Editor's note: As an introduction to the community new staff writer/photographer Kelly Monroe has taken the opportunity to share with our readers a little bit about her life.

LAWRENCEVILLE - I'll start off by saying I am almost completely new to Illinois. Starting at the Daily Record on Monday marked my first job outside the Indiana state lines.

This summer will mark my third anniversary living in Vincennes with my dad, Dean, and my dachshund, Molly. Dad is the Human Resources Manager at Schott Gemtron in Vincennes.

The rest of my family is scattered around with my mom in my hometown of Portland, Ind., my brother in Pendleton, Ind. and my sister in St. Henry, Ohio. I'm the youngest of the crew. My brother, Kyle, is oldest and then my sister, Lauren. Both are married and Lauren has two kids, a four-year old daughter and a seven-and-a-half month old boy. My mom, Nancy, is a retired school teacher but looks after my grandma and my niece and nephew. My parents just marked their 34th wedding anniversary on Sunday, despite living over 200 miles apart.

I was born and raised in Portland, which is a fairly small town about four hours northeast of here between Fort Wayne and Muncie. I graduated from Jay County High School in 2006.

I then attended Manchester College in North Manchester, Ind. for two years, where I dabbled in majors ranging from pre-med to athletic training. After my sophomore year, I transferred to the University of Southern Indiana to major in Print Journalism. During my two and a half years there, I worked for the school paper as a sports reporter and later the sports editor. I graduated in December 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts.

Following graduation, I worked as a sports reporter at the Vincennes Sun-Commercial until this past January.

When I'm not working at the newspaper, I work part-time at the Vincennes Beauty Bar on Main Street. I'm also an independent sales rep for Beauty Society, the skin care and makeup line sold in the store. When I'm not doing either job, I try to visit my family and friends, spend time with Molly, knit and surf the internet.

While a majority of my background is in sports writing, I look forward to covering news. I've had some experience via an internship at the Courier & Press covering everything from Halloween and Christmas events to kidnappings and fires. One of the things I enjoy most about covering news is the excitement when something unexpected happens.
