Drug take back set for Saturday
LAWRENCEVILLE - The Lawrence County Sheriff's Department will once again host a "drug take back" program.

From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, in the parking lot at the sheriff's department, 1306 Lexington Avenue, in Lawrenceville, "a Lawrence County representative will be present to assist in recovering your take back drugs," according to Sheriff Russell L. Adams.

Adams said "all you need to do is drive through the parking lot, hand off the drugs and continue through the parking lot. No questions asked."

The only exception is that needles or sharps will not be accepted.

Lawrence County 4-H salsa garden to be planted May 6
LAWRENCEVILLE - University of Illinois Extension has partnered with Lawrence County Farm Bureau to create a salsa garden.

Youth can be a part of planting, maintaining, and harvesting a meal garden. The end result will yield youth making several different salsas with all the produce that is harvested.

The garden will be planted on May 6 at 4 p.m. at the University of Illinois Extension office. Youth involved with this garden will be asked to attend maintenance weeks as well as harvest weeks.

VU to present honorary doctorate at commencement
VINCENNES - Vincennes University will award an honorary doctorate in Business to William E. (Bill) Updike, Indianapolis, during commencement ceremonies on Saturday, 2 p.m. EDT, at the P.E. Complex.

"We are delighted to honor Bill's exemplary service to Vincennes University. He has brought honor and distinction to VU through his exceptional business career, service to the VU Foundation, and a most generous gift that will greatly enhance VU's instruction in science, engineering, and mathematics for many decades," said VU President Chuck Johnson.

A 1968 VU alumnus, Updike beamed with pride in August 2015 as it was announced that his family had made a $2 million lead gift for VU's Center for Science, Engineering, and Mathematics, an 85,740 square-foot facility that will be named Updike Hall in honor of his family.

VU has long had a special place in Updike's heart, for it was at VU that Bill met his wife Elizabeth, a Vincennes native. His associate degree from VU in Business also laid the foundation for his success at Indiana State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Marketing.

ICC to improve several rail crossings across parts of southeastern Illinois
SPRINGFIELD - Eighteen railroad crossings in the 55th Senate District, which makes up much of southeastern Illinois, are slated for safety improvements as part of the Illinois Commerce Commission's Crossing Safety Improvement Program for Fiscal Years 2017-2021.

  State Sen. Dale Righter (R-Mattoon) says the projects include automatic flashing light signals and gates, reconstructing approaches, or installing concrete slabs in Clark, Coles, Crawford, Effingham, Jasper, Lawrence, Wabash, Wayne and White  counties.

Unit 20 announces eighth grade registration, orientation
LAWRENCEVILLE - Eighth grade students will be coming home with registration papers for the next school year Monday, according to Lawrenceville High School officials.

Personnel from the LHS guidance office will distribute registration material and discuss course offerings with eighth-graders during their science class on Monday.

Freshman Orientation will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the LHS auditorium for all 2016-2017 incoming ninth-graders.

LTC music to present its spring choral concert May 8
ROBINSON - The Lincoln Trail College Concert Choir, under the direction of Jeshua Franklin and the Camerata Illiana, will present a concert at 3 p.m. May 8 in the Zwermann Arts Center Theater.

The program, American Sampler, is a musical anthology of the diverse heritage that is American choral music, from the simple melodies of the colonial period to soulful spirituals to the freedom and energy of Jazz and the unique contributions of modern music.

General admission tickets are available by calling the LTC Performing Arts Office at (618) 544-8657, ext. 1433. Tickets are also available at the door.

Circus coming to Sumner
SUMNER - The circus is coming to Sumner's city park Wednesdsay.

Sponsored by the Community Booster Club, the Culpepper and Merriweather Circus will be at the Sumner park on East Cedar Street with performances at 5 and 7:30 p.m.

This authentic, one-ring, Big Top circus has been featured on National Geographic's Explorer TV series, and A&E special, a Nickelodeon special, Entertainment Tonight and several major newspapers and magazines.

Lawrence County residents are invited to come out to the circus on Wednesday morning to watch the Big Top being raised between 9:30 and 10 a.m. Circus officials said people can also stay for a free tour.

The tour will include facts about performers, a history of the Culpepper and Merriweather Circus and a look as the different animals used in the shows.

The box office opens at 4 p.m. on the midway, which will include pony rides, a moon bounce and concessions.

Lawrenceville city-wide cleanup set for May 4-6
LAWRENCEVILLE - Republic Services will begin collecting items for city-wide cleanup beginning May 4.

Cleanup throughout Lawrenceville will continue through May 6. City officials, in a news release, stressed that "everyone must have regular trash and items for city-wide cleanup curbside by 6 a.m. on your regular trash pickup day."

The city of Lawrenceville will not allow certain items to be included in the cleanup. No toxic substances, tires, liquid paint, electrical items, flammables or construction materials are allowed.

Residents with questions are asked to call city hall at 943-2116.

County students show off their art skills
LAWRENCEVILLE - The Lawrence County Arts Council in cooperation with the Lawrence County Historic Society hosted an art exhibition Wednesday at the society museum.

County high school students competed for an opportunity to have their art work included in the 15th District Congressional Art Competition for a chance to have their work move on to the National Congressional Art Competition in hopes their art will be hung in Washington D.C., within the halls of Congress.

Athletes from 12 counties to compete in Special Olympics spring games
CHARLESTON - Families, volunteers and spectators will be cheering on men and women, boys and girls - all Special Olympics athletes - as they compete in the largest area event of the year for Special Olympics Illinois East Central/ Area 9. 

The annual Spring Games takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 22 at Eastern Illinois University O'Brien Stadium in Charleston. The public is invited to watch the competition. 

East Central/Area 9 is composed of Coles, Clay, Clark, Crawford, Cumberland, Douglas, Edgar, Effingham, Jasper, Lawrence, Richland, and Shelby counties. 

At the East Central/Area 9 Spring Games, approximately 510 athletes from 73 teams are expected to compete in track and field, the most popular of 19 sports offered by Special Olympics Illinois.
