Escorted from courthouse following verdict
Tyler R. McQueen is escorted from the Lawrence County Courthouse Friday night by Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Trent Masterson. Sentencing is scheduled for June 28.


Residents asked to call Crimestoppers with information
PINKSTAFF - The Lawrence County Sheriff's Department and Lawrence County Board, through Crimestoppers, are appealing to the public for any information regarding the recent arson of the Lawrence County Animal Shelter.

Sheriff Russell Adams is asking anyone with information that might help to call the Lawrence County Crimestoppers hotline at 1-888-699-2677. Any and all calls will remain anonymous.

A $500 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.

Mosquito spraying begins Friday
LAWRENCEVILLE - City officials have announced that mosquito abatement spraying will begin Friday in Lawrenceville.

The spraying will be conducted by the city street department.

Arson suspected in animal shelter fire
PINKSTAFF - The Illinois Fire Marshal's office and the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department are investigating a Tuesday morning fire which gutted the county's animal shelter.

Authorities suspect arson, believing the fire was intentional because all of the animals had been freed from their cages before firefighters arrived on the scene.

Firefighters responded to the call about 5:30 a.m. with four units of the Lawrence-Allison Fire Protection District and the Bridgeport Fire Protection district responding.

Lawrence/Crawford employee among governor's appointments
CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today made a number of key appointments to the state's boards and commissions, including a Robinson woman.

Mario Johnson, of Robinson, works for the Lawrence Crawford Association for Exceptional Citizens day program. Johnson was appointed to the Council on Developmental Disabilities. The appointment does not require Senate approval.

VU president says tuition proposal both fair and modest
VINCENNES - Vincennes University President Dick Helton says VU will remain among the most affordable options for Indiana college students, under a proposed tuition plan to be considered by the Board of Trustees on June 26.

Speaking at a public hearing on Friday about VU's proposed tuition and fee increase, Helton said, "We believe this increase is fair, it is modest, and keep in mind that we will still offer the lowest tuition and fees among residential institutions in our state. I think that speaks very well for Vincennes University, its administration, faculty and staff, and our Board of Trustees."

Junior Ranger Series begins Saturday
VINCENNES - Staff and volunteers at the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park are again hosting its Junior Ranger Series.

The Summer Junior Ranger Series will consist of four different events, one every month, all dealing with different topics and interests. All four events are free and open to the public.

The first event is Saturday, from 1-4 p.m. (EST) at the Visitor Center, 401 S. Second Street in Vincennes.

Entitled "Frontiersman Day," the first in the series will show children what their lives might have been like had they lived on the frontier during the 18th century.

OCC offering new information technology program in the fall
OLNEY - Olney Central College will offer a new Information Systems Technology Program beginning this fall.

"Speaking with the students, we felt like there was a real need for a computer information program," said OCC Dean of Instruction Dr. Jeffery Cutchin. "We responded to and addressed that need by developing the IST degree and certificate."

The program will prepare students to handle the day-to-day operations of the computer-related activities for a business and an organization's information systems. Students who complete the program will be able to both support and maintain computer hardware as well as software programs.

Highway through Lawrenceville to honor Trevor Pinnick
SPRINGFIELD - A bill introduced into the Illinois General Assembly will designate the section of U.S. Business 50 through Lawrenceville as the "Trevor Pinnick Memorial Highway."

The joint bill was introduced into the House by State Rep. Brad E. Halbrook while the sponsor in the Senate is Dale A. Righter.

Final registration dates set for summer camp
LAWRENCEVILLE - There's still time to sign up for Lawrence County Camp Girls summer camp.

Final registration will be on the next two Thursdays - May 30 and June 6, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Tepee.

Camp is June 16-22 at McCormick's Creek State Park, near Spencer, Ind.

Library's summer reading program kicks off June 6
LAWRENCEVILLE - Lawrence Public Library has announced its lineup for its Summer reading program entitled "Have Book-Will Travel."

The program will begin on June 6, at Parkside Elementary School and will feature Madcap Puppets presenting "The Cinderella Files." The west side doors will be open at 1:30 p.m. with the program at 2 p.m.
