IDPH: Make sure students are vaccinated
SPRINGFIELD - As the beginning of a new school year rapidly approaches, the Illinois Department of Public Health is reminding parents to make sure students are adequately vaccinated.

"Vaccines are an important step in protecting against serious, and sometimes deadly, diseases," IDPH director Dr. Hasbrouck said. "Vaccines are recommended throughout our lives. They are proven to protect children from 14 serious diseases before they turn two years old, adolescents from cancer caused by certain types of HPV, young adults from meningitis, people of all ages from flu, and aging populations from various illnesses."

Beginning this year, children entering school at any grade level will need to show proof of having received two doses each of rubella and mumps vaccines. In addition, any child entering kindergarten, sixth grade or ninth grade for the first time will have to show proof of having received two doses of varicella (chicken pox) vaccine.

Organizers get ready for another Kids Shopping Day
LAWRENCEVILLE - Kids Shopping Day will be held Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Central Christian Church.

Organizers are preparing for the annual event by bringing donated and purchased items to the church complex.

KSD began in 2006 and helped 166 students return to school with a couple new outfits, shoes and school supplies.

Each year, the number of students has been growing. There were 627 children that took advantage of last year's event.

Last year, there was also over 160 volunteers who helped with the event. Hairdressers also offered their services and provided 163 free haircuts.

Pre-registration was Saturday, but anyone that was unable to attend can register during the event. Pre-registration was created to alleviate congestion outside the church the day of the event. During pre-registration, children will be given a time to return on Saturday to shop with their personal shopper.

Volunteer parking is available at Parkside Elementary School. Shuttle buses will run from the school to the church from 7-8 a.m.

A volunteer group meeting will be at 8:30 a.m. in the church kitchen. Volunteers should be 18 years or older.
