LHS's Irvin, Melton win titles
LAWRENCEVILLE - Two Lawrenceville High School wrestlers won championships, two others placed, and the Indians placed sixth in the 13-team field at the annual Lawrence County Tournament at Lawrenceville High School Saturday.
"Going into a bigger tournament like this one, our goal is to at least finish in the top half. We did that today with a fairly young team," LHS coach Steve Parker said. "We had a lot of pins today, and those add up to bonus points. That helped with our team score."
Three of those pins came from junior 112-pounder Garrett Irvin and junior 215-pounder Justin Melton, both of whom won weight-class champions by pinning all three of their opponents in the first period. In addition, senior Jared Childress placed second at 189 pounds for the Indians, while sophomore Drew Davis was fourth at 125.
Marion edged Robinson for the team title, 182-170 1/2. Mount Carmel (149), West Frankfort (146 1/2) and Carmi (125 1/2) completed the top five. The Indians, who were fourth after the semifinals, but seventh prior to the finals, wound up sixth with 118 points.
Irvin won at 119 by pinning, in succession, Robinson's Zach Koontz (:35), Marion's C.J. Morrison (1:59) and Harrisburg's Phillip York (1:32).
"That's how we expect Garrett to wrestle," said Parker. "He did some nice things out there today. We keep telling him to wrestle with technique instead of trying to muscle guys. He did that, and pretty much dominated the weight class."
Melton, at 215, was also dominant. He spent a total of 2:35 on the mat with pins of Olney's Terry Hayes (:37), Anna-Jonesboro's Taylor Fitzgerald (:22) and Marion's Ken Harris (1:36).
"He's so strong, that he just overpowers guys," Parker said. "But it's the same as (Irvin). We tell him to wrestle with technique. In the finals, he hit a real nice near-side cradle, and put the kid on his back. When he gets ahold of something, he just doesn't let go."
Childress lost on the finals to Marion's Jack Mills, 10-5. He reached the championship match with a 13-5 decision of Carterville's Matt Beuligmann and a pin of Mount Carmel's Matt Smith in 2:35.
"(Mills) beat him last year in the third-place match, pretty easily," Parker said. "This year, Jared made it a better match. He's wrestling smart, and in control. He's shown a lot of improvement, just since the season started."
Davis won two of four matches at 125. In the third-place match, Carmi's Danny Aud pinned the LHS sophomore in 3:35.
"Drew didn't win a match in this tournament last year, and today he got fourth," Parker said. "We talked later, and he wasn't happy with fourth. I kind of like that. He's not satisfied, and wants to get better. I think that will motivate him."
Others who competed for the Indians were 103-pounder Scott Beard (0-2), 119-pounder Michael Turner (1-2), 130-pounder Kramer Sweeten (1-2), 135-pounder Thomas Grove (0-2), 140-pounder Charles Knightstep (1-2), 145-pounder Anthony Cunningham (1-2), 152-pounder Jacob Costello (0-2), 160-pounder Zach Green (0-2), 171-pounder Trevin Douglas (1-2) and heavyweight Jesse Angle (0-2).
"I was proud of all our young guys," Parker said. "They all went out and battled. I think a couple of them were overwhelmed by the atmosphere. They good a good learning experience from the weekend."
The Indians have duals Wednesday at Pike Central, Ind., and Thursday at Carmi.
