LHS golfers ready for new-look LIC
LAWRENCEVILLE - Vying for the Little Illini Conference championship has been a priority for Lawrenceville High School's golf team, but the goal has become more difficult with Newton, Robinson and Olney joining the league.

"It will be a battle with the addition of three pretty good golf schools," LHS coach Dave Berry said. "I believe the work our kids put in this summer will put us in a position to make a run at the LIC tournament championship. We'll have to continue to improve and play our best."

Senior Scott Beard, the team's captain who is after his fourth letter, will lead a young squad.

"Scott was a sectional qualifier last year," said Berry. "We look for him to have a great season."

Other seniors are Jevyn Collins, who was an All-LIC performer last year, and Lane Vories, who has been a scorer from time to time in past years. Both will be right in the mix for the Indians this season,

Junior Hoa Bobe returns after narrowly missing out on a sectional berth last season.

"He's a better player now than he was at the end of last year," Berry said. "Scott (Beard) and Hoa will give us a good one-two punch."

Sophomore Austin DeLoriea returns after gaining plenty of varsity experience a year ago.

"His hard work the past several months has given him more confidence," Berry said. "This will be reflected not only in lower scores, but consistency."

Two other sophomores, returnee Gage Hulen and Jeffery Baxter, hope to play well enough to land varsity positions.

The only freshman on the team is Tanner Gray, who has played a lot of golf over the summer to prepare.

"He has the skill set to be a good golfer," Berry said. "I like the way he hits the ball and competes."

The Indians start their season Thursday, at Flora. Red Hill will also compete in the meet.
