Salukis knock, but can't find paydirt

By

BRIDGEPORT - Red Hill High School's football team could only knock on the door Friday evening.

The Salukis had good chances to hit paydirt in both halves of the opening game of the season, but bogged down in the red zone in a 21-0 loss to visiting Flora.

"Right off the bat we had a couple of chances," said Red Hill coach Billy Gray, after his first game at the helm. "Had we poked it in then, I think the result could have been different. But mistakes happen and that's the way it happened tonight. We'll break down the film and try to fix the problems we had. We'll try to do better next week."

The Salukis had the game's first scoring chance, after Lance Phillips recovered a fumble at the Flora 38. The Salukis promptly marched to the Flora 4, before a delay of game penalty halted the drive.

Trailing 14-0, Red Hill had a chance to make its way back into the game in the third quarter, when a 15-yard punt return by Tristan Holtz gave the Salukis the ball at Flora's 47. Runs of 14 and 13 yards by Eli Evans helped the Salukis march inside the five, but again the offense stalled.

"We got down inside the 20, into the red zone, but just couldn't do anything with it," Gray said. "Once we had the ball, we moved just fine in between the 20s, and at times we even dominated between the 20s. Unfortunately, that's not what matters. What's on the scoreboard is what counts."

Flora quarterback Ethan Leib completed just three passes, but two of them went for touchdowns.

Leib's 78-yard TD pass to Kyle Nicholson with 9:42 to play in the second quarter gave the Wolves a lead they would never lose.

Flora had an 11-play, 80-yard scoring drive to open the second half, which extended the lead to two touchdowns. Leib passed eight yards to Cory Moore for the score, on fourth and seven.

Flora's Brody Mann scored on a 22-yard run with 7:54 left in the game to account for the night's final touchdown.

Junior runners Eli Evans and Max Andersen combined for 135 of the Salukis' 157 rushing yards. Evans led the way with 75 yards on 11 carries, while Andersen toted the ball six times for 60 yards.

Flora's Moore led all runners with eight carries for 94 yards.

The Wolves outgained the Salukis 96-13 through the air and held a 267-170 advantage in total yardage.

The Salukis will host Robinson this Friday.
