Salukis still firing blanks
BRIDGEPORT - While opponents are scoring in an assortment of ways, Red Hill High School's football team has still not found the end zone.
Visiting Robinson handed the Salukis (0-2) their second shutout in as many games Friday evening, posting a 27-0 shutout in a matchup between teams from the Little Illini Conference's Eastern and Egyptian divisions.
The Maroons (1-1) scored when:
One of their own players recovered a teammate's fumble and rolled into the end zone.
They returned a Red Hill interception for a score.
They ran the ball into the end zone.
They threw a TD pass.
The game took a turn very early, after the Salukis appeared to have stopped Robinson on a fourth and goal play from the 6-yard line with 6:14 to play in the opening quarter. Robinson fumbled on the play, but the Maroons caught a huge break when lineman Nicolas Iovanac picked the ball up and rumbled six yards for a score.
"Had we picked that fumble up or recovered it, it would have been a different quarter," Red Hill coach Billy Gray said. "It would have been a different outcome. I'm not saying we would have won the game, but momentum is such a big thing. We lost it early with that big play."
The Maroons extended their lead just over a minute later, thanks to the first of five Red Hill turnovers. On the Salukis' second play, Robinson's Austin Weck intercepted a pass thrown by Red Hill quarterback Dalton Murray and returned it 30 yards for a score.
"I'm going to take the blame for that one," Gray said. "He's a freshman quarterback and I made a call that forced him to make a (bad) decision."
The Maroons stretched the lead to 21-0 with 4:44 to play in the first half when Austin Stevens hit Derrick Nicholas on a 44-yard scoring pass. The only touchdown of the second half came with 11:55 remaining in the game, on a nine-yard run by Robinson's Jason Richart.
Robinson finished with 250 yards rushing and 50 through the air.
"Defensively, I was really proud of the kids," said Gray. "They didn't quit. They fixed the technique issues they had from last week both offensively and defensively. I think we're on the road to some success at some point here pretty soon."
The Salukis struggled to move the ball all night, totaling just 138 yards, only 15 of which came through the air, and seven first downs. Red Hill's deepest penetration was to the Robinson 30-yard line in the second period, but that series was stopped on downs.
"We need a lot more consistency, and that's what I told the kids after the game," Gray said. "We can't take plays off. We're using 13 or 14 kids. We've got eight or nine gong both ways a lot of the time. They have to give us their all every play. We can't have breaks or mental letdowns. We're trying to eliminate those, but that's all we can do - try."
The Salukis will take to the road for the fist time this season Friday, when they'll face Edwards County in a LIC Eastern Division matchup between teams that are 0-2.
