Lions snap losing streak at expense of Salukis
ALBION - Edwards County may not be better than Red Hill High School's football team.
But the Lions were better on Saturday, and that's all that matters.
Edwards County scored two touchdowns and a safety in the final quarter, wiping out the Salukis' 12-0 lead on the way to a 16-14 victory. The win snapped a 22-game losing streak by the Lions, dating to Sept. 11, 2009.
The game was scheduled for Friday evening, but was pushed back to Saturday due to the thunderstorms that swept through the region.
"The team that showed up the best today won the game," said Red Hill coach Billy Gray, whose team fell to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the Little Illini Conference Eastern Division. "I don't know that our kids' hearts were every really in the game. I thought we were making strides, but this is by far the worst game we've played."
The Lions (1-2 overall, 1-0 LIC Eastern) mustered just 26 yards rushing and 113 yards in total offense.
But the Edwards County defense came up with the biggest play of the game, as Clifford McKinney scooped up a Red Hill fumble and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown with 8:45 to play in the game. Jake Toutloff's run on the two-point conversion stretched the lead to 16-14.
The Salukis scored a safety, tackling the Lions' Jace Borowiak in the end zone with 4:15 to play, but it wasn't enough. Red Hill had a chance to regain the lead but bogged down, offensively.
"(Edwards County coach Logan Crum) called a good game," Gray said. "They did what they had to do to win. I'd say they won the game with their defense. We shut them down, but they came up with the big fumble return for a touchdown."
Tho Salukis, who totaled 94 yards on the ground and 72 through the air, also scored on a fluke play. Red Hill's Eli Evans recovered a teammate's fumble and raced 49 yards for a score, putting his team on top, 6-0, nine minutes into the game. It was the first touchdown of the season for the Salukis.
The Salukis stretched their advantage to 12-0 at halftime. Max Andersen capped a scoring drive by running 15 years for a TD, 3:35 before the intermission.
"I told the kids at halftime when we were up 12 that the game was not over," Gray said. "We'd had all the breaks up to that point. We knew Edwards County was a fighting football team, a team that doesn't quit."
Gray said the Lions wanted it more.
"I question the heart of our team a little bit," he said. "How bad did we want it? They were the team that wanted it more."
The Salukis will host Oblong in their homecoming game at 7 p.m., Friday.
