Little Illini Conference golf tournament
Tewell repeats as girls champ, LHS boys 4th
STOY - Red Hill High School sophomore Morgan Tewell defended her championship at the Little Illini Conference meet Monday at Oak Glen Golf Course, while Lawrenceville High School's team carded an upper-division finish in the boys tournament.

Tewell shot a 12-over-par 83 and easily bested 12 over golfers to claim first place for the second straight year. As a freshman, Tewell won the title by shooting a 25-over-par 96.

In the boys meet, the Indians carded a score of 366, despite having no first-team all-conference performers.

Boys meet

Olney (324), Robinson (329) and Casey (337) held down the top three spots.

"I knew we'd have to play really well to finish in the top three, but I'd have also been really disappointed if we didn't finish in the top four," LHS coach Dave Berry said. "I think we could have played better. But if you look at the scores in total, of how everybody played today, I think we probably played better than most teams."

Jeffrey Baxter, a sophomore who sometimes is not even in the LHS lineup, shot 43 on both the front and back nines to pace the Indians with a 15-over-par score of 86,

"He had a great round today," LHS coach Dave Berry said. "He really stepped up."

Senior Scott Beard and Junior Hoa Bobe both shot 20-over-par rounds of 91 to score for LHS, while sophomore Austin DeLoriea also scored by shooting 98. LHS did not use the scores of seniors Jevyn Collins (99) or Lane Vories (107).

Red Hill shot 427 and placed ninth in the 10-team field, ahead of Palestine (493).

Freshman Zach Breault shot a 19-over-par 90 to top the Salukis, while Andrew Buchanan (111), Trey Aguirre (112) and Austin Hawkins (114) also contributed to the Red Hill team total. The Salukis tossed out the scores of Jacob Tabler (126) and Matthew Paddick (131).

"Some of the boys played a little better than they had been, others about the same," Red Hill coach Ryan Cox said. "A lot of these guys will be back next year, and we're looking forward to getting better."

Olney, playing in the LIC for the first time this season, beat Robinson, another newcomer, for the league title. The Tigers had four players shoot 89 or better to claim the win, while all of Robinson's scoring players had scores of 86 or better.

On a breezy day in which the conditions were sometimes difficult, Casey senior Chris Lee shot a 3-over-par 74 to win the individual title by two strokes over Olney junior Dylan Taylor. Olney's Joshua Haussy was third with a 77, while Robinson teammates Tristen Murphy and Tom Goodman both came in with 79s to complete the top five.

The top 10 players in the boys tournament were presented All-LIC plaques after the competition. Baxter received an honorable-mention certificate for the Indians, as he finished one shot out of the medals.

Girls meet

No team scores were kept, as Oblong is the only team with four players.

Because there are fewer players, only four girls were awarded All-LIC plaques.

Tewell had no competition, as she beat runner-up Lyndsey Knight of Cumberland, who shot 101, by 18 strokes. Flora's Ginger Williams (103) and Oblong's Erin Leggitt (113) were also all-conference performers.

"Morgan ended up shooting her two best nine-hole rounds of the season here today at the conference championships," Cox said. "She really came through. She played with confidence all day. I saw here some out on the course, and she looked at ease. It was a great day for her."

Red Hill's other player in the girls tournament, junior Taylor Heath, shot a 125.
