Salukis go nowhere in setback to Pirates
BRIDGEPORT - Visiting Cumberland scored a touchdown in each quarter Friday night and kept Red Hill High School's football team from getting a first down while whipping the Salukis, 26-0, in Little Illini Conference Eastern Division play.

The Pirates (4-2, 3-1 Eastern Division) had the ball for more than 32 minutes and totaled 353 yards in total offense to the Salukis' 79.

"We got beat up all night," said Red Hill coach Billy Gray, whose team fell to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the Eastern Division after it was shut out for the third time this season. "The better team won the game. I tip my hat to Cumberland, They played hard. They're strong, physical kids and they really brought it to us."

The Pirates did most of their damage on the ground, as they rushed 64 times for 299 yards, an average of 4.7 yards per attempts. Senior Jonathan Duniphan, who carried 24 times for 153 yards and a pair of scores, was the Pirates' primary threat.

In the meantime, Red Hill got off only 34 plays, four of which were punts. The Salukis were limited to 79 yards in total offense, of which 67 were accumulated on the ground.

The Salukis gained two first downs in the game, but both were wiped out by penalties. Red Hill was flagged seven times for 50 yards.

Turnovers also proved costly, as the Salukis lost two fumbles while quarterback Dalton Murray and running back Derek Clevy both threw interceptions.

"I always tell the kids that they can't win if they fumble and have a lot of penalties," Gray said. "It seemed like anything positive we had, it was called back by a holding penalty or whatever it may be. You can't win ballgames with those types of letdowns."

The Pirates immediately took charge of the game by moving 64 yards in 10 plays on their opening drive, taking 3:47 off the clock. Duniphan capped the drive with a one-yard scoring run.

The Salukis then saw a 37-yard kickoff return by Derek Clevy go to waste. Starting at the Cumberland 37, Red Hill committed the first of their four turnovers, a fumble.

Two possessions later the Pirates found the end zone again, as quarterback Monte Wolke's three-yard TD run capped a 12-play, 47-yard drive.

The second half was more of the same, as the Pirates put the game away with two more lengthy scoring drives.

Nathan Day extended the lead to 20-0 with 3:44 to play in the third period on a seven-yard TD run. Duniphan capped the scoring with a 38-yard touchdown run up the middle 10 seconds into the final quarter.

"I know defense is our strong suit," Gray said. "But any time a team eats up the clock the way they did, gaining four or five yards a play, you're gong to lose."

Things will get no easier for the Salukis during the final three weeks of the season. They'll travel to undefeated Casey to close out Eastern Division play this week. A home game with Olney and a trip to Lawrenceville will conclude the season.
