Salukis play well, but can't stop Tigers
BRIDGEPORT - Red Hill High School's football team came up with big plays on both sides of the ball Friday night, but it wasn't enough to stop Little Illini Conference Egyptian Division champion Olney.
The Tigers (7-1) scored three touchdowns in each of the first three quarters and waltzed away to a 49-20 win on Red Hill's senior night.
"Olney's a potent team, and I was proud of the kids the way they hung in there," Red Hill coach Billy Gray said. "We did a lot more things right than we have all year. It's the most points we've scored in a game. The guys were giving it all up for the seniors, and I appreciate that."
After the Tigers sprinted to a 21-0 lead on touchdown runs by Colton Carmody and Justin Bailey and a TD pass from Bailey to Zac Eagleson, the Salukis worked their way back.
Red Hill pulled to within 21-6 on Derek Clevy's five-yard run.
Olney's Dirk Washburn accounted for the next two touchdowns, the first on a one-yard run and the second on a 71-yard pass from Bailey.
Red Hill came to life again, as freshman quarterback Dalton Murray connected for junior back Max Andersen on a screen pass that went 74 yards for a score. It was the first career TD pass for Murray.
The Salukis then used a big defensive play to pull even closer.
Noah Puntney blocked an Olney punt and Tristan Holtz recovered in the end zone for a Red Hill touchdown. Clevy ran for the two-point conversion, cutting the lead to 35-20 with 1:58 to play in the third period.
"We had them sweating a little," Gray said.
Olney quickly put the game away, thanks to a pair of touchdowns by Ian Miller. Miller scored on a one-yard run in the final minute of the third period, then caught a six-yard TD pass from Bailey with 7:32 to play in the game.
While Olney seeks its eighth straight win this week against visiting Cumberland, the Salukis will conclude their season with a trip to rival Lawrenceville.
