High school wrestling
Indians' Anderson wins title; team 4th at Cumberland
GREENUP - Red Hill High School junior Max Andersen claimed the 182-pound championship Saturday and five other Lawrenceville High School wrestlers placed as the Indians finished fourth in the 17-team Skull and Crossbones Invitational, hosted by Cumberland High School.

While Anderson was rolling to the championship at 182, RHHS junior Trevor Richards reached the title match at 220 pounds before being upended. Three other Indians - Zach Kocher (132), Thomas Grove (152) and Jacob Wirth (170) - placed fourth, while Gage McIntosh was fifth at 160.

"I'm really proud of the way the kids wrestled," said LHS coach Tom Tewell. "We got beat up, physically. As a team, we don't wrestle physical enough. But we wrestled through everything, and everybody finished their matches."

The Indians totaled 124 points, behind champion Prairie Central (246 1/2), Shelbyville (179 1/2) and Herrin (147 1/2). Benton (120), Cumberland (116), Carlyle (112), Olney (111), Mt. Olive (98 1/2) and Mt. Carmel (88) completed the top 10 among the 17 teams that scored points.

Tewell noted that Grove got poked in the eye and is nursing shoulder injuries, Andersen continued on despite being head-butted on multiple occasions and Kocher overcame a nosebleed.

"They all showed a lot of toughness," he said. "They didn't back down."

Andersen reached the championship match by pinning Oakwood-Fithian's Hunter Harrison in 1:13, then posting a 6-2 decision of Mount Carmel's Cody Wall. Anderson upped his record to 13-1 with a 9-0 decision of Prairie Central's John Kupferschmid in the championship match.

"Max is like a freak of nature," Tewell said. "He's got such good instincts, and he's so fast and so strong. He's never been really good at riding people, but in the championship match today he rode that kid like a rented step-mule. He's really starting to come around."

Richards is now 8-6 after falling in the 220-pound finals to Prairie Central's Cody Parks, 3-1. Richards opened the day by pinning Shelbyville's Noah Applegate in 1:20. He then decisioned Carmi's Zack Clark, 11-6, and pinned Carmi's Jordan Rainy in 1:42 to earn a spot in the championship.

Kocher now stands at 9-5 on the season after falling to Cumberland's Zack Brandenburg in the third-place match in 1:16. The LHS senior scored a pin and a decision before being pinned in the semifinals by Benton's Peyton Smith in 3:00.

Grove is now 14-3 on the season after suffering a 7-4 loss to Mount Carmel's Beau Taylor in the third-place match. Grove notched a pair of pins to reach the semifinal match, where he suffered a 5-1 setback to Shelbyville's Lucas Duckett.

Wirth, who was pinned by Tyler Keniepp of Prairie Central in 3:25 in the 170-pound third-place match, is now 10-5. He reached the semifinals by pinning two opponents, before being taken out by Herrin's Ted Cravens in 3:00.

McIntosh had a long day at 160 pounds, which ended with a 5-1 decision of Shelbyville's Jordan Johnston in the fifth-place match. After winning four of five matches on the day, McIntosh is now 12-3.

Others who competed for the Indians were Jacob McKinstry (120), Tristan Davis (138), Ryan Seed (145), Shawn Rogers (195) and heavyweight Jake Greentree.
