Red Hill 58, Clay City 33
Salukis have little trouble moving on
ALBION - The Red Hill Salukis led from start to finish en route to an opening round victory Monday over Clay City in the Class 1A regional tournament at Edwards County High School.

The Salukis scored the first six points, led 23-10 at halftime and 36-19 after three quarters on the way to a 58-33 win over the Wolves.

With the win, Red Hill, now 5-20 on the season, earns the right to take on number one seed Cisne at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The Runnin' Lions defeated the Salukis 59-49 Feb. 2 at Cisne in what was a close game until the end.

The Salukis used a strong inside presence, controlling the boards and getting many of their baskets on offensive rebounds or driving layups.

"We switched some things up a little bit. I felt like it would help us matchup-wise, and it would help sub a little bit easier in this tournament," Red Hill coach Bryan Havill said.

The Salukis went with a bigger lineup, using 6-4 sophomore Ryan Kolb and 6-0 freshman Tanner Stoltz. Noah Puntney and Steven Ramsaran, starters during most of the season, gave Havill experience off the bench.

Three Salukis registered double-doubles with 6-3 Jake Allen leading the way with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Both Matthew Young and Kolb had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Four of Kolb's rebounds were on the offensive end resulting in baskets.

The Salukis held a 38-19 advantage on the boards.

"I thought we got mostly what we wanted offensively and I don't think the press hurt us too much tonight. That was a concern, to make sure we broke the press. I thought we had the kids where we needed them, in the right spots. I thought we hurt them several times," Havill said.

Young scored twice on driving layups against the press to start the game before Allen gave the Salukis a 6-0 lead. Clay City got on the board with two free throws with 4:53 left in the first quarter.

The Wolves didn't get their first field goal until the 2:13 mark. Clay City was just 3-for-22 in the first half from the field.

Red Hill led 10-7 after one quarter, and broke the game open with an 11-2 run. Five different Salukis scored during the run with Dalton Murray starting things off with a three-point basket, followed by hoops from Allen, Stoltz, Kolb and Young.

The Salukis used a fast-start in the third quarter with Murray scoring from inside and Kolb getting a basket and free throw for a 28-10 lead.

Clay City then used a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 30-19 late in the third quarter. An 8-2 run by the Salukis spanning the end of the third period and beginning of the fourth pushed the lead back to 17, 38-21.

The Salukis outscored Clay City in every quarter. The final score was Red Hill's largest lead.

For the game, Red Hill hit 21-of-43 shots from the field for 49 percent shooting while the Wolves were just 14-for-44 for 32 percent.

Nathan Dulaney led the Wolves with 13 points. Clay City ended its season at 11-19.

In Monday's second semifinal, Louisville-North Clay eliminated Noble, 47-31.
