High school softball
Indians flatten South Knox for first win
VINCENNES - Lawrenceville High School's softball team more than doubled its output for the season Wednesday while registering its first victory.

The Indians had totaled 20 runs in losing each of their first six games, but erupted for 17 hits Wednesday while trouncing host South Knox, Ind., 22-5.

Lawrenceville (1-6) saw 11 runners cross the plate in the opening inning, and went on to score at least once in every inning thereafter. The game was stopped at the end of five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Amerea Miller doubled twice and tripled for the Tribe, while Heidi Litherland tripled, doubled and singled.

Samantha Mason tripled and singled, while Breanna Shick doubled twice. Sarah Kocher and Kary Trinkle both singled twice, while Heather Miller, McKenzi Kelly and Lindsey Baker all came through with base hits.

The 22-run output was easily the best for the Indians this season. Their previous high came in a 10-9, season-opening loss at Red Hill on March 21.

Shylo Hearn allowed only one run through four innings before the Spartans scored four times in the fifth. Hearn finished with a five hitter and all five South Knox runs were earned. Hearn walked three batters and registered a strikeout.

The Indians are slated to return to competition today at Casey.
