Lawrenceville 7, Marshall 6
A. Miller rips two homers, defense turns three
LAWRENCEVILLE - Lawrenceville High School sophomore Amerae Miller belted a pair of home runs and the Indians' defense turned a triple play Monday in a 7-6 softball win over visiting Marshall at Phil Alsman Memorial field.

Miller hit her first two home runs of the season, solo shots in the second and fourth innings and the Tribe turned an obscure triple play to get out of a second-inning jam.

It was the second straight win for LHS (2-6, 1-5) LIC, who was without coach Dave Berry, as he was away for the birth of a grandchild.

"This is the best game I've seen these girls play and it's a shame Coach Berry wasn't here to see it. He would have been really proud of them," LHS assistant Chelsea Buher said.

After Marshall scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game, LHS responded with the winning run in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Kary Trinkle boomed a double to right field. Leadoff batter Heidi Litherland then came through with two outs, as she hammered a triple to right.

McKenzi Kelly added a double to the nine-hit LHS attack, while Heather Miller, Lindsey Baker and Sarah Kocher all contributed run-scoring singles in the opening inning. The other LHS hit belonged to Breanna Shick.

Shylo Hearn scattered 12 hits to earn the pitching win. Hearn whiffed three batters while striking out none.

Holding a 7-6 lead in the sixth inning, she was able to nail down the win. Marshall loaded the bases with two hits and an error in the sixth, but Hearn got out of trouble when Carson Boyer flied to right for the final out.

Hearn buckled down in the seventh when she set the Lions down in order, including a strikeout of Madison Shaffner to end the game.

A key moment early was in the second inning when the Lions had plated a run and had runners on second and third with nobody out.

Marshall's Abbie Switzer hit a liner that Hearn caught at her shoelaces. Not certain whether Switzer was out, Hearn looked runner Madison Shaffner back to third, then fired to Shick at first base.

At that point, Shaffner tried to score from third and was thrown out by Shick. In the meantime, Marshall runner Abbie Switzer, who was on second, had moved to third, thinking the ball had been hit on the ground. She was retired at second base to complete the triple play.

The Indians will try for their third straight win today in a 4 p.m. game at Vincennes Lincoln.
