MATTOON - The Lawrence County Babe Ruth Baseball 15-year-old All-Star team split a pair of games Thursday to stay alive in the Southern Illinois State Tournament.

In the tournament opener, host Mattoon whipped Lawrence County, 11-1. Lawrence County bounced back later in the day to defeat Wabash County, 15-4, and will face Paris in a loser's bracket game at 5 p.m. today.

In the win over Wabash County, Oliver Large fanned five batters over five innings to earn the win. Dalton Sholders fanned three while pitching two innings in relief.

Large tripled, doubled and singled to lead Lawrence County at the plate, while Kameron Vinsel singled three times. Sholders doubled twice, while Slayton Dorney connected for two singles.

Also, Swade Howard doubled while Grant Gaither, Chase Shick and Jordan Lockhart added base hits.

In the opening game, Dorney gave up only two earned runs in five innings and took the loss.

Dorney singled twice in the game, while Howard scored the only Lawrence County run.

Crawford County and Mattoon, the only teams who have yet to lose a tournament game, will open today's action at 3 p.m.

Lawrence County and Paris will play today's second game at 5 p.m. The winner of the Lawrence County-Paris game returns at 7 p.m. to play the Crawford County-Mattoon loser.

Competition will continue with a championship game at noon Saturday. A second game, slated for 2 p.m., will follow if necessary.
