High school volleyball preview
Salukis look for good season
BRIDGEPORT - One win against 23 losses doesn't sound like a great season.

But all things considered, it was a banner year for Red Hill High School's volleyball team in 2012.

The Salukis entered the season having lost 187 consecutive matches, dating to 2002. They finally snapped the streak that had grown to 203 matches last Oct. 4 by beating host Hutsonville in an invitational tournament.

Coach Sarah Will says that single victory has raised spirits in many ways.

"I think the players are a lot more confident," said the coach, whose team will host South Knox, Ind. to open the season tonight. "On the other hand, we lost some of our power. We're trying hard to replace those people and build on what we already know."

The roster features a total of eight juniors and seniors, who will get the bulk of the playing time at the varsity level. Tonight's tentative lineup includes seniors Emilee Ellingsworth and Katelyn Kocher and juniors Katie Nicholas, Andi Tennis McKenzie Wolfe and Baelee Holloway. Another junior Kenedee Whittaker, is currently injured but will serve as the team's primary setter when she returns. Off the bench, junior Hannah McVey will step in as a server.

"At the varsity level I want us to be competitive," said Will. "I don't think we'll necessarily win a lot because I know we're still really far behind other teams. But I want the girls to compete and try their best at all times."

Sophomores Elizabeth Ellingsworth, Leah Ramsaran, Claudia Stremme, Kaylee Recco and Sonia Adamson will play mostly at the reserve level. The same is true of freshmen Lucy Hill, Savhanna Smith and Laken Mills.
