LHS, RHHS defeated in openers
Both Lawrence County high school volleyball teams suffered defeats to open the season Thursday evening.

Visiting Hutsonville dropped the opening game but rallied to defeat Lawrenceville in three games. The Salukis, also playing at home, fell in straight games to South Knox, Ind.

Lawrenceville

The Indians claimed the first game, 25-23, but Hutsonville rallied to a 25-17, 25-22 victory.

It snapped an 18-match losing streak for the Tigers.

"I thought we had a pretty decent opening night," said LHS coach Trinity Britton. "We passed OK, and our serves were great, We only missed one or two all night, I can't complain too much."

Mattie White topped the Tribe with three aces, while Morgan Mefford and Brianna Mefford both contributed a pair, Kourtney Osmon was credited with a team-high 16 assists. At the net, Brianna Mefford led the way with six kills. Kazia Frederick had five and Abby Higginbotham and Frederick four apiece.

The junior varsity Indians rallied to win, 18-25, 25-22, 25-19.

White had six aces for LHS and Morgan Mefford three. Brianna Mefford contributed five kills and Frederick three. Higginbotham led the team

Red Hill

The visiting Spartans handled the Salukis, 25-19, 25-12.

"It was a good game to open the season," Red Hill coach Sarah Will said. "We have many things to improve on."

Emilee Ellingsworth had a team-high six assists and added two blocks for RHHS. Katelyn Kocher contributed an ace, two kills, two blocks and a dig.

McKenzie Wolfe added an ace, a kill, two blocks and four digs. Baelee Holloway was credited with a kill and five digs and Andi Tennis two kills and a dig. Katie Nicholas contributed a kill.

The Spartans won the junior varsity match, 25-8, 25-9.
