Lawrenceville 57, Oblong 8
Wishbone powers Indians to easy victory
OBLONG - When things get tough, Lawrenceville High School's football team can always rely on the wishbone,

Facing a crowded line of scrimmage from Oblong, the Indians turned to "the bone" early against the Panthers and watched it pay off in the form of an easy 57-8 victory. The game clock ran continuously in the game's last 10:57, as a 40-point LHS lead put the Illinois High School's mercy rule into play.

Lawrenceville gained 23 first downs in improving to 2-0, while piling up 457 yards in total offense and putting at least 10 points on the scoreboard in each quarter.

The Indians rallied from an early 8-6 deficit to lead by scores of 14-8, 26-8 and 36-8 at the quarter stops, before putting three more TDS on the board in the fourth quarter.

"I think on both sides of the ball we were a little better tonight and had some success," said LHS coach Greg Wood, whose team has outscored the opposition 83-16 in the first two games. "It was nice to be able to put that many points on the board and get everybody into the game."

Austin Wanke, who didn't have enough practice time to play with LHS in the opener, proved to be a workhorse against the Panthers. The senior carried 22 times for 163 yards and scored touchdowns on runs of 4, 4 and 11 yards.

"It was good to have him back," said Wood. "He did a lot of good things out there tonight."

Junior Wyatt Rinsch visited the end zone even more frequently as he ran the ball 20 times for 116 yards and crossed the goal line on runs of 2, 3, 1 and 7 yards.

Sophomore Kenny Waller added a 40-yard TD scamper for the Tribe, while junior Justin Moore made his way into the scoring column when he tackled a Panther in the end zone for a safety.

Oblong had some good moments early, as it wiped out a 6-0 LHS lead by moving 62 yards in four plays to take an 8-6 lead midway through the opening quarter. Fifty-one of those yards came through the air as quarterback Alec Jacobs clicked for three completions, including a 28-yard TD pass to Kyler Fear.

After the teams traded punts, the Tribe moved 48 yards in five plays to take the lead for good on Wanke's second 4-yard TD run of the game.

The Indians wore the Panthers (0-2) down from that point on.

"They just had so many people in the box," said Wood. "(In the wishbone) you're not pulling. You're just firing off, putting a hat on a hat and doing some double-teaming. Physically, we just outmanned them. They were putting numbers up there but we got a hold of them and pushed them down the field."

Wood said that LHS quarterback Zach Shoulders was slowed by a leg injury. After rushing for 215 yards in the Indians' opening win over Edwards County, Shoulders carried just 11 times for 32 yards. He had a better night throwing the ball, connecting on 4 of 10 passes for 80 yards.

LHS totaled 457 yards in offense while limiting the Panthers to 138.

"I was proud of him," Wood said. "He's not 100 percent and is struggling. We didn't give him the ball tonight, but it didn't affect his attitude. He's a young man who has all kinds of talent and expects to get the yards. He was unselfish tonight and I thought that was awfully good of him."

While the Indians face their first Little Illini Conference Egyptian Division game at unbeaten Robinson (2-0) next week, the Panthers will travel to Cumberland to begin play in the LIC Eastern Division.
