High school volleyball
Cumberland downs LHS in LIC play
LAWRENCEVILLE - Visiting Cumberland defeated Lawrenceville High School's volleyball team, 25-17, 25-18, in the LHS gymnasium Thursday evening.

The Indians (0-8, 0-2 Little Illini Conference), held their own against the Pirates at times during the match.

"Unfortunately we just can't seem to pull out the win. At times we were neck and neck with Cumberland and then before I knew it the girls just lost the will to win," LHS coach Trinity Britton said. "I know they are not used to winning, but we do have the talent to be a winning team. They just have to believe it. They need to see themselves as the coaching staff sees them - winners."

Kazia Frederick served three aces for LHS. Brianna Mefford led the team with four kills, while Frederick added three. Sadie Newlin, Abby Higginbotham and Kourtney Osmon all added two kills.

Brianna Mefford topped the team with eight digs and Morgan Mefford contributed six. Higginbotham had a team-high 11 assists and Osmon totaled three,

Cumberland claimed the junior varsity match, 25-9, 25-5.

Haylee Croslow led LHS with three aces while Natalee Reynolds added two. Madison Carter topped the team with two kills, while Croslow contributed five digs. Courtney Ridgley and Reynolds both had two assists.

The Indians will host Vincennes Rivet on Monday.
