Red Hill 34, Edwards County 32 (OT)
Salukis claim thriller over Lions on homecoming
Red Hill 34, Edwards County 32 (OT)
BRIDGEPORT - Red Hill High School football coach Billy Gray was 34 years of age entering Friday's homecoming encounter with Edwards County.

Less than three hours later, after a thrilling 34-32 overtime win over the Lions, Gray joked that he'd aged 10 years.

"It feels great," said Gray, whose team snapped a six-game losing streak. "It was my first home win as a coach. It wasn't how we wanted to do it, but a win is a win."

After the score was tied at the end of each of the first four quarters, the Salukis had the ball first in overtime. Red Hill quickly took advantage, as Blake Adams scored on a 3-yard run on third down. What proved to be the difference in the game was the two-point conversion run by Tristan Holtz, boosting the Salukis (1-2, 1-0 LIC Eastern) into a 34-26 lead.

Edwards County (0-3, 0-1 LIC Eastern) countered on its first play in overtime, as Jace Borowiak reached the end zone on a 10-yard run. On the critical two-point conversion play, however, an Edwards County pass was knocked away in the end zone, ending the game.

Turnovers were a key, as the Salukis came up with four - all interceptions by Dalton Murray - while giving up two.

One of Murray's interceptions was returned 90 yards for a touchdown.

"We had a great night out of (Murray)," said Gray. "I thought the whole defense played well, even though we gave up quite a few points."

The game was tied at zero, six, 18 and 26 at the quarter stops.

"It was a wild one with a lot of penalties and a lot of things going on. Fortunately it come out in our favor," said Gray.

A 45-yard touchdown pass from Levi Rogers to Karlin Compton with 3:31 to play in the third quarter boosted Edwards County to its first lead, 12-6.

The Lions were going for more, but Murray stepped in. He picked off a pass over the middle, dodged a defender and raced 90 yards for a score to tie the game at 12 with 5:42 to play in the third period.

Murray, the RH quarterback, later scored on a 1-yard run and fired a 15-yard TD pass to Steven Ramsaran - the Salukis' first TD pass of the season.

Red Hill rushed 48 times for 207 yards. Adams led the way with 87 yards on 14 attempts, while Garrett Harper added 45 yards and Holtz 43.

"We thought we could power it at them," Gray said. "We got Jacob Wirth back from injury tonight and we put him and Trevor Richards on the same side of the ball and ran behind them with success."

Edwards County finished with 324 yards in total offense to 256 for the Salukis. The Lions did most of their damage through the air as quarterback Levi Rogers completed 12 of 23 passes for 250 yards.

Edwards County had a good chance to win the game in regulation, after recovering a fumbled kickoff on the Red Hill 15 with less than three minutes to play.

The Red Hill defense forced a stop, and took over at its own 6 in the final minute. The Salukis offense was then able to run out the clock.

The Salukis will play Friday at Oblong, while the Lions will host Eastern Division heavyweight Casey.
