Holmes, Holmes lead Indians
LAWRENCEVILLE - Lawrenceville High School junior Hannah Holmes set a school record Tuesday, as the Indians defeated visiting Mount Carmel and Fairfield in cross country meets.

Holmes was unchallenged, winning the girls race in 20:02, setting a school record for LHS girls on the three-mile course in the process.

LHS had six of the top 10 finishers in the girls race and five of the top 10 in the boys meet.

"Coach Christy and I are very pleased with the team efforts," LHS co-coach Bill Bandy said. "Both teams knew the challenge they faced and got the job done."

What was impressive about the performance of Holmes - who also holds track and field records in the distance races for the Indians - is that she did it without being pushed.

She built a commanding lead early in the race and went on to win by 1:34 over runnerup August Martinez of Fairfield.

"She ran an incredible time, considering she won by over a minute and a half and was never challenged," said Bandy.

Heather Holmes (third in 21:40) and Maddy Liberman (fifth in 23:19) both registered top-five finishes. Rosie Aguirre (sixth in 24:21) and Hannah Burkhardt (eighth in 25:54) also contributed to the LHS point total.

Macey Paddick (ninth in 25:55) rounded out the LHS efforts.

"Heather Holmes and Rosie Aguirre also ran personal bests, and Hannah Burkhardt returned to the line up to score after being out two weeks with an injury," said Bandy.

Boys meet

Connor Holmes, a junior at Red Hill who runs for the Lawrence County cooperative team, led the charge by finishing second in 17:47. Holmes challenged Fairfield's Corbin Kaka for a good part of the race, but Kaka eventually pulled away to win in 17:26.

Dylan Volkman ran third in 18:18 to boost the LHS efforts. Harry Loeb (sixth in 19:22), Noah Volkman (eighth in 19:24) and Tyler Tewell (10th in 20:18) completed the LHS scoring.

Brandt Cochran (12th in 20:52), Slayton Dorney (13th in 21:03), Wyatt Whewell (14th in 21:57), Jag Rich (17th in 22:49) and Gage Hulen (18th in 23:58) also competed for the Indians.

"Harry Loeb and Noah Volkman both ran season best times to help narrow the gap among our top five runners," said Bandy.

The Indians will have three days of practice to prepare for their own invitational, set for Saturday morning. The girls will run at 10 a.m., with the boys race set for approximately 10:45. An open race will follow.

Mount Carmel, Odin, Newton, Salem and Dieterich will provide the opposition.
