Cumberland 50, Red Hill 36
Salukis come up short in shootout
TOLEDO - Host Cumberland scored more points in the first half Friday night than it had all season, and held off Red Hill High School's football team, 50-36 in a Little Illini Conference Eastern Division tilt.

The Pirates, who entered Friday's game having scored just 28 points in their first five contests, took a 34-28 lead at halftime. Cumberland erased a 36-34 Red Hill lead by scoring two touchdowns in the final period.

Losing three fumbles was likely the difference in the game, according to Red Hill coach Billy Gray, whose team is now 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the LIC Eastern.

"The turnovers killed us tonight," said Gray. "We put the ball on the ground way too many times. We'd talked before, about how we'd not had a game in which we turned it over a lot, and tonight that got us."

Poor tackling also plagued the Salukis again, according to Gray. Cumberland quarterback Monte Wolke was the chief beneficiary as he rushed 19 times for 218 yards and had TD runs of 32, 40, 54 and 8 yards.

"He really hurt us," said Gray. "He runs hard and he reads it well. It comes down to not tackling again. I hate to go back to the Oblong game because that was a nightmare, too, but we just didn't tackle very well tonight."

The Salukis outgained the Pirates (2-4 overall, 2-2 LIC Egyptian) 448-337. Sophomore quarterback Dalton Murray, who had 204 passing yards entering the game, connected on seven of 12 aerials for 260 yards. He connected three times for touchdowns to Steven Ramsaran, on plays that covered 50, 24 and 65 yards.

Murray also topped Red Hill runners with 83 yards on the ground, including a 12-yard TD run to open the scoring, 1:44 into the game. He also ran for three two-point conversions. Red Hill's other touchdown came on a 3-yard run by Blake Adams in the second quarter.

The Salukis trailed 34-20 when Wolke scored his fourth TD of the first half on an 8-yard run 3:13 prior to the break. A 24-yard pass from Murray to Ramsaran in the final minute of the half cut the lead to 34-28 at the break.

The only touchdown of the third period was a 65-yard pass from Murray to Ramsaran with 1:54 to play in the period. Murray ran for the two-point conversion, giving RHHS a 36-34 lead entering the final stanza.

Cumberland's Holden Elwood, who had scored on a 60-yard kickoff return earlier in the game, put the Pirates ahead for good with a 6-yard TD run with 10:15 remaining.

Cumberland then put the game away with a time-consuming drive that ended when Wolke threw a 19-yard TD strike to Ethan Kemper with 1:39 left in the game.

It was the last scheduled meeting between the Salukis and Cumberland, which is departing the Little Illini Conference for the Little Okaw Valley Conference. After playing the Pirates annually starting in the fall of 2001, the Salukis finished with a 7-6 edge in the series.

The Salukis will close out Egyptian Division Friday by hosting traditional power Casey (6-0, 4-0 LIC Egyptian), which was ranked second in last week's Associated Press Class 1A poll.
