High school cross country
Indians compete well at Patriot Invitational

PEORIA - Lawrenceville High School's cross country teams ran well in general at Saturday's Patriot Invitational, although it might not have showed up in the results.

"Coach (John) Christy and I are very proud of both the boys and girls teams," LHS co-coach Bill Bandy said. "Most of the runners ran their best times of the year in a very tough meet."

The meet is run on the three-mile course at Detweiller Park. It is the course that will host the Illinois High School Association state finals on Nov. 9.

Lawrenceville's boys team placed 23rd in a field of 34 full teams with a team score of 587.

The LHS girls team, made up of runners from both Lawrence County high schools, finished 15th in a field of 27 teams with a team score of 391.

Girls meet

The Indians' Hannah Holmes became the first girl in the history of the LHS program to break 20 minutes on a three-mile course, according to Bandy. Holmes led the Lawrenceville efforts as she finished 31st in a field of 211 in 19:46. Heather Holmes (50th in 20:36), Maddie Liberman (83rd in 22:03), Hannah Burkhardt (113th in 23:02) and Rosie Aguirre (114th in 23:02) completed the scoring for the Indians.

St. Joseph-Ogden placed first in the field of 27 full teams with 77 points. Annawan-Wethersfield (97), Henry-Midland (170), Ottawa Marquette (179) and Elmood-Brimfield (186) completed the top five.

Robinson was the only other area school at the meet, and finished 21st with 487 points.

Gardner South Wilmington's Daly Galloway was the individual champion in 18:02. Katie Ramsey of Annawan-Wethersfield (18:16), Lewistown's Ericka Hibser (18:17), Amboy's Megan Grady (18:31) and Henry-Midland's Jillian Monier (18:35) completed the top five.

Boys meet

Connor Holmes placed 58th in a field of 261 runners to lead the Lawrenceville efforts. Holmes finished in 16:57.

Dylan Volkman (72nd in 17;14), Harry Loeb (260th in 18:37), Noah Volkman (405th in 18:52) and Tyler Tewell (587th in 19:43) completed the LHS scoring.

Brandt Cochran (781st in 19:55) and Slayton Dorney (986th in 21:21) did not score for the Tribe.

Robinson, which ran 10th with 348 points, was the only other area team to compete.

Elmwood-Brimfield won the meet with 79 points. Sterling-Newman (81), St. Joseph-Ogden (116), Pleasant Plains (138) and El Paso-Gridley (231) completed the top five.

Annawan-Weathersfield's Michael Cook won the race in 15:16, six seconds ahead of Spring Valley Hall's Al Baldonado. Kewanee's Rolando Aguillar (15:24), Annawan-Weatherfield's Cody Baele (15:25) and Elmwood-Brimfield's Nate Herridge (15:27) completed the top five.

Robinson's Noah Tennison ran a strong race, as he finished 13th in 15;53.

In the open race after the varsity event, the Indians' Jag Rich ran 66th in 20:21. Wyatt Whewell (71st in 20:38) and Gage Hulen (89th in 21:54) also competed.

The LHS teams will run Saturday in regional competition at Robinson. The girls race, on the course near Nuttall Middle School, will begin at 10 a.m. The boys race is slated to start at 11.
