Blocked punt turns tide; Tigers roll to win
OLNEY - A blocked punt late in the opening period gave host Olney momentum Friday night, and the Tigers coasted to a 57-14 win over Red Hill High School's football team.

The Salukis trailed just 7-6 late in the first quarter, but were forced to punt. The Tigers blocked the kick of RHHS punter Dalton Murray and recovered at the Red Hill 5-yard line. Olney (6-2) quickly converted the miscue into a TD and tallied the next 43 points.

"The blocked punt really got us," said RHHS coach Billy Gray, whose team fell to 2-6. "The kids never got their heads up after that. Given the season we've had, you expect that a little bit."

Olney took the lead for good less than a minute into the game on a 26-yard run by quarterback Nolan Shan.

The Salukis countered with 3:02 to play in the opening quarter as Murray raced 63 yards for a touchdown. Red Hill attempted to take the lead with a two-point conversion, but was stopped short.

Red Hill forced the Tigers to punt, but was then stopped deep in its own territory. The tide changed for good after Olney blocked the Salukis' punt. The Tigers' Gus Lathrop rushed for a 5-yard touchdown which led to a 15-6 Tiger lead at the end of the period. Olney added two more touchdowns in the second quarter and took 30-6 lead at halftime.

The Tigers reached paydirt twice more in the third period, stretching the lead to 50-6. A 2-yard TD run by Ian Miller put the 40-point continuous clock into motion with 2:16 to play in the third period.

Murray's 50-yard touchdown run coupled with a two-point conversion run by Tristan Holtz left Olney with a 50-14 lead after three quarters. Tiger reserve Collin Smith concluded the scoring with a 1-yard TD run with 1:04 to play.

"It was a tough loss," said Gray. "The kids played hard. When you're a 1A school playing a 4A school it's tough to win ballgames."

Olney held a 387-244 advantage in total offense.

Murray highlighted the Red Hill attack as he rushed 13 times for 126 yards and scored both RHHS touchdowns.

Shan ran nine times for 83 yards and two TDs to spark the Tigers and completed five of 14 passes for 67 yards, including a 7-yard TD strike to Carson Waggoner.

Red Hill will conclude its season Friday evening when it hosts rival Lawrenceville in the annual Oil Field Trophy game.

Olney will close out the regular season at Cumberland before taking part in the Class 4A post-season tournament.
