Dieterich Holiday Tournament
Salukis fall short in third-place battle with Arcola
DIETERICH - The Red Hill High School boys basketball team jumped out to a big first-quarter lead but couldn't hold on in the third-place game of the Dieterich Holiday Tournament Saturday afternoon.

A disastrous third quarter for the Salukis led to a 56-53 win for the Arcola Purple Riders, leaving Red Hill 2-2 in the tourney.

Coach Bryan Havill's Salukis are now 2-11 on the season. Arcola upped its record to 7-4.

Both teams had their runs and both clubs battled back. The final five minutes were a dog fight with the game tied three times and the lead changing hands several times.

"I knew this was going to be a good game. I felt like we were two even teams," Havill said. "The game could have gone either way, unfortunately, it didn't go our way.

A steal and basket by Dalton Murray with 2:54 left in the first quarter gave the Salukis a 16-4. The Purple Riders closed the gap to 16-10 after one quarter and 19-15 two minutes later. Red Hill then scored the next five points on a three-pointer by Tanner Gray and a bucket by Jake Allen.

With Red Hill now leading 24-15 with four minutes to play in the half, Arcola closed the gap again and trailed 30-26 at intermission.

Arcola scored the first eight points of the third quarter to take a 33-30 lead before Allen stopped the run and tied the game at 33-33 with a 3-point basket.

The Purple Riders then regained the lead and extended it to 44-35 early in the fourth quarter.

"On a positive note, being a young team and being in this situation, I didn't know what I was going to get out there," Havill said. "I didn't know if I had a team that was going to wilt, and we were going to lose by 12 or 15 .... we battled back and we did take the lead, so that showed me a little bit about our character. We just couldn't finish the deal."

Two free throws followed by a basket by Allen tied the game at 49-49. Murray then hit two free throws for a 51-49 Red Hill lead. Arcola's Justin Hobgood scored to tie the game, but Allen hit two more free throws for a 53-51 lead with 1:23 left. It was to be Red Hill's last lead of the game as Arcola hit three free throws in the final minute.

Tanner Stoltz was off the mark with a 3-point attempt with four seconds to play.

Allen led three Red Hill players with 18 points, including nine in the fourth quarter. Murray added 11 points - seven in the first quarter and four free throws in the final five minutes of the contest. Stoltz chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Ryan Kolb led the Salukis with 10 rebounds.

For the winners, 5-9 sophomore Wyatt Fishel scored 16 points and 6-0 Nick Hudson came off the bench to score 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field and 2-for-4 from the free throw line. Kollin Seaman, another sophomore, added 13.

The Salukis are off until Jan. 10 when they host Cumberland.

Newton won the tournament by defeating host Dieterich 50-30. Fifth place went to Beecher City, a 57-47 winner over Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran. Oblong took the seventh-place game, 71-54 over Louisville North Clay.
