Indians fall in OT to Flora, Effingham St. Anthony
Overtime was not kind to Lawrenceville High School's basketball team over the weekend in games against quality opposition.

The Indians stormed from behind to force an extra session Friday at Flora, then let a nice lead slip away before going into overtime Saturday at Effingham St. Anthony.

On both occasions LHS fell well short, as its record slipped to 3-10. Flora outscored LHS 13-2 in overtime in Friday's 65-54 Little Illini Conference game while St. Anthony concluded a day-long shootout by outscoring LHS 12-0 in overtime on the way to Saturday's 50-38 win.

"The kids play so hard and work so hard, and you're hoping they can be rewarded for that," LHS coach Randy Bishop said. "It's frustrating for them to get to the point where they think they're going to win and they can't quite get over the hump. But I'm sure we're going to continue to get better and start to win."

The Indians battled back from a 40-22 deficit to force overtime, then were outscored 13-2 in the extra session.

"I really appreciate the effort," Bishop said. "I thought in the second half our kids played with an extreme amount of heart and got after it defensively."

The game was in Flora's favor early, as the Wolves led 16-10 after a quarter and 35-22 at halftime.

Flora (8-4) took its biggest lead, 40-22, by scoring the first five points of the second half.

The Indians finished the third period by outscoring Flora 18-4,cutting the margin to 44-40 entering the final stanza.

The Wolves continued to lead until late in the game. LHS finally knotted things at 52-52 on Jordan Shick's 3-point basket with 42 seconds remaining.

Flora's Bryce Pearce missed a 3-pointer to win. After a scramble for a loose ball, the Wolves had a final chance, but Pearce again misfired.

The OT belonged to the Wolves from the start. After scoring just one field goal in the third and fourth quarters, Flora clicked for three in a one-minute span to break things open.

Pearce's 3-pointer 20 seconds into the overtime put Flora ahead to stay. Flora's Ethan Leib then worked free for an easy basket and Logan Smith converted a turnover into a bucket, boosting the lead to 59-52. LHS got no closer than five the rest of the way, and Flora finished the game on a 6-0 run.

Brandt Cochran, who hit five 3-pointers, topped the Indians with 21 points. Shick, who totaled 11, was the only other LHS player in double figures.

Two players who'd been seldom used, junior Thomas Mahrenholz and sophomore Dalton Sholders, were both on the floor during the LHS comeback.

"Thomas Mahrenholz came off the bench and did a great job, and Sholders contributed a lot, too," Bishop said.

Leib, who hit eight of 12 shots, topped the Wolves with 26 points. Pearce added 21 and Allen 12.

The Indians won the junior varsity game, 59-36. Ben Schultz topped the Indians with 12 points, all on 3-point baskets.

Effingham St. Anthony (11-4) never led until overtime.

LHS led 11-8 at the first stop, 23-16 at halftime and 29-24 after three periods, before the team went to overtime with the score tied at 38.

"I thought right at the end we played not to win," Bishop said. "We got rattled and didn't run the offense, after running it so well for three-and-one-half quarters."

Freshman Bryce Winningham led three LHS players in double figures with 12 points, including seven in the second period. Shick and Cochran both added 10 points.

St. Anthony's John Goeckner led his team's comeback. Goeckner, who hit eight of 17 shots, topped all players with 25 points. He scored all 14 of the Bulldogs' points in the fourth quarter and added five more in the overtime.

No other St. ANthony player reached double figures.

Shick's driving basket gave the Indians a 37-30 advantage midway through the final period, but LHS managed only one more point from then on.

The Indians hurt their own cause down the stretch, missing four of five from the foul line in the 2:06.

Goeckner tied the game at 37 with 2:39 remaining when he scored with an offensive rebound, was fouled and connected on the free throw.

Cochran missed twice from the foul stripe at the 2:06 mark, before Winningham one of two from the line with 1:21 remaining, giving LHS a 38-37 lead.

Goeckner hit the first of two foul shots with 27 seconds to play to tie the game for the final time.

The Indians' final chance to win the game went awry when Cochran's last-second shot was blocked.

St. Anthony took its first lead of the game at the outset of the overtime when Neil Williams scored after making a steal near mid-court. That started the Bulldogs' 9-0 run to end the game.

LHS will entertain Oblong in Little Illini Conference play Tuesday evening.
