Lawrenceville 57, Oblong 45
Indians surge to LIC win over Panthers
LAWRENCEVILLE - Lawrenceville High School's basketball team controlled play during the middle two quarters Tuesday evening and scored its first victory in 2014 - a 57-45 Little Illini Conference verdict over visiting Oblong.

The Indians (4-10, 1-2 LIC) trailed 12-9 at the first stop, but rallied to take a 27-21 lead at halftime. The Tribe put the game away by outscoring the Panthers (6-9, 0-3 LIC) 16-6 in the third period.

"Especially in the third quarter I thought we really played some good defense and did a nice job of running our offense and looking for good shots," said LHS coach Randy Bishop, whose team was good on 24 of 62 shots for 39 percent. "After having two tough overtime losses (over the weekend) it was nice to come back and sustain, get a win. I think that'll help our confidence going into (Friday's game at once-beaten Newton)."

Balanced scoring played a big part in the LHS win. Sophomore Brandt Cochran topped the squad with 14 points, while classmates Harry Loeb and Jordan Shick added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Four other Indians added between four and seven points.

"I'm happy about (the balance)," Bishop said. "Some of our kids looked to shoot a little bit more tonight and that's good. We had some kids come off the bench and do a pretty nice job for us."

Koert Mehler led the Panthers (6-8) with 16 points, while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Six other Oblong players added between three and nine points.

After the Indians scored the game's first four points, Oblong controlled the opening period. The Panthers used a 7-0 run to take the lead and were in front 12-9 at the stop.

The second period featured three lead changes and a tie, but the Indians moved in front for good two minutes into the quarter on Brady Benson's 3-pointer. That started LHS on a run that resulted in a 27-21 halftime advantage.

The Indians quickly stretched their lead to double digits after halftime, then scored the final six points of the third period to move in front, 43-27.

Shick scored the first two baskets of the fourth period to give LHS a 48-27 lead. LHS would lead by as many as 23 points before the Panthers made the final margin more respectable.

Lawrenceville fought back from a 10-point halftime deficit to win the junior varsity game, 46-45. Brady Benson led three LHS players in double figures with 11 points, while Ben Schultz and John Barnes both netted 10.
