Girls teams defeated in LIC Tourney quarterfinals
OLNEY - Lawrence County's girls high school basketball teams resoundingly made their way to the loser's bracket of the Little Illini Conference Tournament Saturday.

The Lady Salukis and Lady Indians, playing in quarterfinal games of the 37th annual event, were defeated by a combined 84 points. Thankfully, tournament rules call for a running clock in the fourth quarter if one team or the other has a lead of 30 points or more. The mercy clock, utilized in both games involving Lawrence County teams, at least made the end come quicker.

Red Hill, seeded ninth in the 12-team league, had the daunting task of playing top-seeded Marshall in the day's opening quarterfinal at 3 p.m.. The Lady Lions (15-0) struggled for a couple of minutes before pulling away to a 62-15 win. It was similar to a meeting earlier this season, when Marshall won at RHHS, 66-21 on Dec. 12.

Lawrenceville, seeded sixth, faced the same fate when it tangled with third-seeded Olney in a 6 p.m. game. The Tigers (13-7) opened a 28-point halftime lead and were never challenged in winning, 59-23. It was also Olney's second win over the Lady Indians (6-9) this season. The Lady Tigers hosted LHS on Dec. 19 and posted a 61-41 win.

Marshall 62, Red Hill 15

The Lady Salukis (3-7) actually took an early 4-1 lead on a couple of quick baskets by sophomore Jamesha Western,

However, Marshall recovered to close out the quarter on an 8-2 run to take a 16-8 lead,

Marshall at one point scored 28 straight points while holding Red Hill scoreless for a period of 11:44.

Western's basket with a minute remaining in the opening quarter cut the Marshall lead to 14-8. The Lady Salukis didn't score again until Western scored with 5:16 remaining in the third period, by which time Marshall had a 42-10 lead.

Western finished with nine points to lead RHHS. Heather Perry added four points and Macey Weiss two to complete the attack.

Katie Grooms topped the Lady Lions with 22 points, while Cheyenne Thompson added 12 and Breah Keim 11.

The Lady Salukis will host Edwards County in a consolation bracket quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. this evening. The winner will return to Flora at 6 p.m. Wednesday to play either fifth-seeded Palestine or 11th-seeded Robinson in the consolation bracket semifinals. Red Hill already owns one win over Edwards County this season - a 48-21 decision in Albion on Dec. 16.

The Lady Tigers scored the game's first four points and were never threatened. Olney led by scores of 22-5, 37-9 and 50-18 at the quarter stops.

Olney scored 18 straight points spanning the first two periods while holding the Lady Indians scoreless for 7:33. The Lady Indians' Morgan Parrish finally stopped the run with a free throw at the 5:37 mark of the second period, cutting the lead to 25-5.

Parrish and Kelsie Ferrell both totaled nine points to lead the Lady Indians (6-9). Kourtney Osmon added three points and Cailyn Andrews two to complete the scoring.

Marley Miller led the Lady Tigers with 19 points, while Kelsey Shipman added 15.

The Lady Indians will host Cumberland at 7 p.m. today in a consolation bracket quarterfinal game. The winner return to Flora at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to face either eighth-seeded Oblong or seventh-seeded Casey in the consolation semifinals.
