Leg-weary Lady Indians split two
LAWRENCEVILLE - A leg-weary Lawrenceville High School girls basketball team split a pair of home Little Illini Conference games over the weekend.

Casey led from start to finish Friday evening and handed the Lady Indians a 45-43 setback. Lawrenceville followed up with a 51-25 thrashing of Cumberland Saturday morning in the LHS gym. LHS had defeated both opponents earlier in the week, on the way to winning the consolation bracket championship in the Little Illini Conference Tournament.

"We played a lot of games this week and did a lot of traveling to Flora and back. I think we were really tired and mentally we were a little weak Friday," LHS coach Misty Bellville said. "I think Friday we were thinking about being tired and it took its toll in the long run."

After the weekend split, the Lady Indians (10-10, 3-4 LIC) had played eight times in a 10-day span. They're not yet done, however. LHS will travel to Newton tonight and Marshall on Wednesday before hosting Edwards County on Thursday. All are LIC games.

The Lady Indians - 58-49 winners over Casey in the tournament at Flora on Wednesday - were hoping to beat the Lady Warriors for the second time in three days.

It wasn't to be, as the Lady Warriors led at every stop in the process of turning the tables. Casey was on top 12-11 at the end of the opening period, 21-17 at the half and 31-27 after three quarters.

Kourtney Osmon, the only LHS senior, totaled 15 points and 11 rebounds for LHS. Brianna Mefford registered a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards.

Osmon and Cailyn Andrews both accounted for three assists.

Casey sophomore Conner Cutright led all players with 23 points, while Chelsea Cox contributed 11.

It was a true team effort, as LHS coasted past the Lady Pirates.

The Lady Indians, who led by scores of 18-6, 31-7 and 45-17 at the quarter stops, had nobody in double figures although nine girls scored between two and eight points.

Mefford and Kelsie Ferrell both made four field goals and scored eight points apiece to lead LHS. Freshman Morgan Parrish added seven, while Osmon, Andrews and Kazia Frederick all scored four.

Parrish grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while Osmon, Andrews and Parrish all had two assists. Parrish also had four steals as LHS forced the Lady Pirates into 25 turnovers.
