Wrestlers place 11th at LeRoy
LEROY - Lawrence County's high school wrestling team stepped up in class Saturday and met with mixed results at the prestigious Randy Bowman Invitational, hosted by LeRoy High School.

Only seven members of the team made up of wrestlers from both Lawrenceville and Red Hill high schools made the trip, and the team - operating under the LHS flag - placed 11th in a 17-team field with 56 points.

Although no Lawrence Countian was able to reach the finals, four of them notched places.

LHS junior Tristan Davis, who had a 2-2 record on the day and now stands at 18-8 on the season, was fourth at 138 pounds, Davis scored a pin over Oakwood-Fithian's Steven Mackiewicz and a 9-7 decision of Monticello's Jamie Smith to reach the semifinals, then lost his last two matches, In the third-place bout, Peoria's Brandon Gregory was a 16-1 winner over Davis via technical fall.

Hoa Bobe, a senior at LHS wrestling at 145 pounds, and Trevor Richards, a senior at RHHS wrestling heavyweight, both scored fifth-place finishes.

Bobe had a 4-1 mark on the day and now stands at 18-9 on the season. He opened the day with a pin, then lost his quarterfinal match by pin. He responded with a pin and a decision to reach the fifth-place match, where he pinned Derek Meeks of Illinois Valley Central in 5:48.

Richards was 2-1 on the day and is now 22-7 on the season. Richards was pinned in his opening match, but was able to wrestle for fifth place after pinning Kendrick Green of Peoria in 1:25. Richards scored another pin in the fifth-place bout, taking out Garrett Wood of Eureka in 49 seconds.

Jacob Wirth, a senior at Red Hill, was in a top-heavy field at 170 and notched a sixth-place finish. Wirth, now 20-8, dropped an 8-3 decision to LeRoy's in the fifth-place match.

The Indians will wrestle in a dual Wednesday at Effingham, and will take part in the annual Eastern Illinois Tournament - for teams in conferences that don't put on conference tournaments - Saturday at Robinson.
