Lady Indians win at Newton, even record at 11-11
NEWTON - Lawrenceville High School's girls basketball team moved above the .500 mark for the first time in 2014 Monday, pulling away to a 60-46 Little Illini Conference win over host Newton.

The Lady Indians moved to 11-10 on the season and evened their LIC mark at 4-4. LHS hasn't been above .500 since early in the season, when it won its first two games, but lost the next three.

The Lady Eagles held a slim lead at the end of the opening period, 17-16, before LHS moved to a 30-28 halftime lead. Lawrenceville took command of the game in the third period, outscoring Newton 15-6 to take a 45-34 lead.

Cailyn Andrews scored 16 points to lead a balanced LHS attack, while Brianna Mefford added 15 and Kourtney Osmon 14.

Mefford grabbed 13 rebounds and Osmon 12 for LHS, while Andrews, Mefford and Osmon contributed three assists each. Alicia Wimberly contributed four steals off the bench, while Osmon added two.

Newton's Ariel Richards, a freshman, scored 19 points and was the only Lady Eagle in double figures.

Lawrenceville also won the junior varsity game, 31-27. Kazia Frederick topped LHS with eight points.

Lawrenceville will continue with its busy schedule on Wednesday, with a makeup game at unbeaten Marshall. LHS will entertain Edwards County on Thursday.
