Fourth-quarter surge helps Salukis to win
BRIDGEPORT - Red Hill High School's basketball used an 11-0 run early in the final period Saturday night to close the door against visiting Cisne.

The Salukis (5-16), who snapped a three-game losing streak, never trailed, and used the fourth-quarter spree to finally put the Runnin' Lions (9-10) away, 54-45.

Leading 32-31 entering the final period, RHHS made its first six shots, while at the same time Cisne was making six turnovers. Jake Allen, Tanner Stoltz and Kameron Vinsel all made 3-point baskets in the surge that saw the Salukis stretch the lead to 48-34 three minutes into the fourth quarter.

RHHS coach Bryan Havill noted that the Salukis had switched to a smaller lineup at the start of the final period.

"Ryan Kolb had picked up his third foul and we figured it was a good time to give him a breather," said Havill, whose team led 15-3, 25-15 and 32-21 at the quarter stops. "We went with a lineup that was a little bit smaller, with more shooters. It was at that point that we made a little bit of a run."

Sophomore Dalton Murray led a balanced Red Hill attack with 17 points. Murray hit four 3-pointers and scored 16 points in the opening half, as Red Hill looked to have control of the game.

"He sprained his ankle pretty bad (at Edwards County), but I thought at our last practice that he looked more healthy than he had in a long time," Havill said. "He's starting to get back into the rhythm and get more lift on his shot."

Allen added 15 points for Red Hill, including 11 in the final period, while Stoltz scored 10 points after halftime and finished with 12.

Cisne's Jayden Hatcher hit seven of 12 shots and led all players with 18 points. Kyle Hosick drilled two 3-point baskets in the fourth period to keep the Lions alive and finished 11 points. Nick Kambestad added nine points and led all players with a dozen rebounds.

Turnovers - 27 in all - kept the Runnin' Lions from pulling off the win. Cisne made nine turnovers in both the first and fourth periods, in the process of being outscored 37-17. In between, the Lions had a total of nine turnovers in the second and third periods, while outscoring the Salukis 28-17.

Red Hill had just 10 turnovers, but poor foul shooting kept the Salukis from winning by a bigger margin. Red Hill was just three of eight from the stripe and missed three times in the final quarter.

"We've got to be a little smarter down the stretch," Havill said. "We're a young ball team and we've not been in a lot of these situations. But at some point in time we've got to make better decisions."

Prior to picking up his third foul, Kolb scored at the outset of the final period to give Red Hill a 34-31 lead.

Allen traded 3-point baskets with Hosick, leaving the Salukis with a 37-34 advantage two minutes into the final period.

Stoltz started the 11-0 Red Hill spree with a 10-footer for a 39-34 lead. Stoltz followed with a 3-pointer, followed by one from Vinsel that pushed the margin to 45-34. Murray's free throw and a basket by Allen gave the Salukis a 48-34 lead midway through the final period, and Cisne got no closer than five points the rest of the way.

Hatcher's two free tosses with 1:20 remaining pulled Cisne to within 50-45. Allen countered with a pair of free tosses for Red Hill, then scored an easy basket with just less than a minute remaining to put the game away.

Red hill also won the junior varsity game, 44-34. Vinsel scored 18 points in the victory, while Tanner Gray added 12.

The Salukis will host rival Lawrenceville in Little Illini Conference play Friday evening.
