|Six Lawrence County wrestlers advance to sectional|
VANDALIA - Though it produced no champions in Saturday's regional meet, Lawrence County's high school wrestling team will be well-represented in sectional competition at Robinson.
The co-operative team of Lawrenceville and Red Hill high schools advanced four second-place finishers and two who finished third to the sectional, which starts Friday evening and concludes Saturday. Two more members of the team, which wrestles under the LHS flag, placed fourth.
Lawrence County scored 125 1/2 points to place third in the team standings, behind only host Vandalia (257 1/2) and Olney (137 1/2) and ahead of Mt. Carmel (118), Fairfield (79 1/2), Robinson (79), Carmi (70), Carlyle (38) and Breese Mater Dei (22).
Taking second for the Indians were LHS sophomore A.J. Mendenhall (132 pounds). LHS senior Hoa Bobe (145) and RHHS seniors Jacob Wirth (170) and heavyweight Trevor Richards. Third-place finishers were RHHS senior Ray Knightstep (152) and RHHS junior Cole Westall (160).
Just missing out on sectional berths were LHS juniors Evan Briner (126) and Tristan Davis (138). Only the top three finishers in the 14 weight classes move on.
Mendenhall (17-5) won twice by pin to reach the 132-pound title match, which he lost 1-0 to Robinson's Alec Keeler.
Bobe (22-12) opened with a technical fall of Carmi's Randall Essary, then pinned Mt. Carmel's Brandon Stringfellow in the semifinals in 1:36. In the title match, Vandalia' Dalton Blankenship improved to 39-4 by pinning Bobe in 2:45.
Wirth (25-10) reached the finals with a 12-0 decision of Breese Mater Dei's Calvin Heimann. In the title match Vandalia's Seth Purcell (37-3) was a 15-0 winner by technical fall over Wirth.
Richards (28-9) suffered a 4-3 loss in the championship match to Vandalia sophomore Kendrick Woolsey. Richards pinned Olney's Nathan Umfleet and Carmi's Ray Smock to reach the championship.
Knightstep and Westall both won third-place matches to keep their seasons alive. Knightstep (15-12) needed to win two of three matches just to wrestle for third, and then scored a 14-8 decision over Carmi's Michael Brown. Westall (24-8) also won three of four matches on the day, including a pin of Carlyle's Tyler Flood in 2:54 of the third-place match.
Briner and Davis both suffered one-point losses in their third-place matches or they would also have qualified to wrestle in the sectional. Briner, who finished 14-17, was a 3-2 loser to Vandalia's Luke Tessman in the third-place match. Davis, who finished 23-12, lost 9-8 in overtime to Olney's Dalyn Brach while trying to claim third.
Sophomore Wade Godfrey, who lost both matches on Saturday at 220 pounds, was the only other Lawrence Countian to take to the mat.
All of the Lawrence Countians who advanced to the sectional will wrestle in the first-round Friday evening. Regional champions earn first-round byes at the sectional. Second-place finishers are paired up against third-place finishers from a different regional, with the winner to face a regional champion in the quarterfinals.
