Lady Salukis fall short at Flora
FLORA - Red Hill High School's girls basketball team held host Flora to a single point in the second period Friday night, but was still unable to pull off what would have been the upset of the season in the Little Illini Conference.

Red Hill carried a 13-7 lead into halftime against the favored Wolfgals, but couldn't hang on. Flora recovered to lead 25-22 after three periods on the way to a 37-28 victory.

The setback snapped a three-game winning streak for the Lady Salukis, who finished the regular season at 7-10 with a 5-6 mark in the LIC. Flora was the runnerup two weeks ago to undefeated Marshall in the LIC Tournament.

Jamesha Western topped the Lady Salukis with nine points, while six other Red Hill players added between two and five points.

Junior Brooke Bayles led her team with 11 points.

Fouls and foul shooting proved troublesome for Red Hill, which was whistled for 18 fouls compared to eight for the hosts. Red Hill lost both of its six-foot sophomores, Western and Alexis Thacker, to five fouls.

Flora cashed in 14 times in 20 trips to the foul stripe, while Red Hill was four of six from the line.

The Lady Salukis will host the Illinois High School Association Class A regional tournament starting with tonight's 7 p.m. game between fourth-seeded Dieterich and fifth-seeded Farina-South Central.

Semifinals are set for Tuesday. Top-seeded Louisville-North Clay will play the winner of tonight's game at 6 p.m. Third-seeded Red Hill will host second-seeded Palestine - a team it has lost two twice this season - in a game scheduled for 8 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday with the winner to move on to sectional play at Cumberland next week.
