Mt. Carmel 76, Lawrenceville 58
Golden Aces flex muscles
LAWRENCEVILLE - There are plenty of reasons why Mount Carmel is the top-seeded team in the Illinois High School Association Class 2A regional tournament it will host next week, and they were on full display Saturday afternoon in the Lawrenceville High School gym.

The Golden Aces overcame a seven-point deficit at the end of the first quarter to win going away, 76-58. It was the second win for Mt. Carmel (19-7) over the Indians (11-13) this season.

LHS coach Randy Bishop noted that the Indians were badly outrebounded, and in the second half were unable to contain the Golden Aces' Levi Laws.

The Golden Aces outrebounded LHS 29-15, including a dozen offensive rebounds.

"In the third quarter, I think they had eight or 10 points from offensive rebounds," Bishop said. "We couldn't get them off the boards."

Laws, who totaled 14 points, was hampered with three fouls in the first half, including two charging calls.

"He sets the tempo," Bishop said. "I thought our guards backed off of him in the second half instead of really pressuring him. We pressured him in the first half and forced him into some turnovers and got some charging calls. In the second half we were timid about getting on him."

The Indians took their biggest lead of the game when sophomore Brandt Cochran drilled a 3-pointer at the first quarter horn for a 19-12 advantage.

The tide turned in the second period, as the Golden Aces used an 8-1 run to get back into the game. Mount Carmel regained the lead, 28-27, on a bucket by C.J. Diel at the 3:18 mark. The teams traded leads four times prior to the end of the half, the last time when the Golden Aces' Austin Thompson scored for a 32-31 edge with 30 seconds to play. Mount Carmel's Reese Metcalf added insult to injury with a long 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer, as the Aces took a 35-31 lead into the break. The Indians closed to within 41-38 on Cochran's basket 2:30 into the second half, before the visitors pulled away. A 13-4 run to end the period gave the Golden Aces a 58-44 lead entering the final period.

Cochran, who hit half of the 20 shots he attempted, led all players with 26 points. He scored 16 of his points after halftime and finished with four 3-point baskets.

Harry Loeb added a dozen points and seven rebounds for the Tribe, while freshman Bryce Winningham finished with nine points on a trio of 3-point baskets.

Metcalf finished with 24 points and a game-high eight rebounds for the Golden Aces. C.J. Diel used his 6-5 frame to pile up 19 points, of which 11 came in the final period, while Laws totaled 14 points.

Lawrenceville notched a 38-35 win in the junior varsity game, behind 15 points from Dylan Volkman and 10 from Brady Benson.

The Indians start a busy final week of the regular season Tuesday by hosting Carmi. LHS is also slated to entertain Edwards County Wednesday, then travel to Olney Friday and tentatively to Cumberland Saturday to finish the regular season.

The Indians will begin regional play at Mount Carmel a week from tonight when it will face Carmi in a 6 p.m. tip-off.
