Poor second quarter proves costly for Salukis
NEWTON - A second-quarter dry spell proved costly for Red Hill High School's basketball team Saturday in a 56-43 Little Illini Conference loss to host Newton.

Red Hill made only one basket while being outscored 13-4 in the quarter as the Eagles (20-4, 8-1 LIC) opened a 26-13 lead at halftime.

"It's tough to dig a hole when you're playing a team like Newton," said Red Hill coach Bryan Havill, whose team is 5-18 overall and 2-7 in the league. "They run their offense so well and they defend so well, and that makes it an uphill battle."

Both teams scored 30 points in the second half. The Salukis were able to cut the Newton lead to 10 points on five occasions after halftime, but were never able to close to within single digits.

Tanner Stoltz scored 14 points to pace a balanced Red Hill attack, with 10 of those coming after halftime. Ryan Kolb added 13 points and Dalton Murray 11, and both snared six rebounds to share team honors.

Newton was bolstered by the return of senior Lucas Stone, who'd been out with a back injury. Stone hit eight of 13 shots on his way to a game-high 21 points, while also leading all players with 11 rebounds.

Brock Mammoser, who came off the bench to score 10 points, was the only other Eagle in double figures.

Newton won the junior varsity game, 39-26. Kameron Vinsel topped the Salukis with eight points.

The Salukis will entertain Marshall on Tuesday and are tentatively to host Oblong in a makeup game on Wednesday before closing out the regular season Thursday at Louisville-North Clay.

Red Hill begins regional play at Edwards County a week from tonight with a 7 p.m. game, also against Louisville-North Clay.
