IHSA Class 2A regional
Carmi's Brown shoots down Indians, 71-64
MT. CARMEL - Carmi's Brodie Brown hit 3-point baskets to end both the second and third periods Monday evening, but he was just warming up.

In the end it was Brown who did Lawrenceville High School's basketball team in, as he hit seven 3-point baskets on the way to a game-high 31 points in the Bulldogs' 71-62 victory in the opening round of the Class 2A regional tournament.

"He really hurt us," said LHS coach Randy Bishop, after his team finished 12-16. "There were times we didn't guard him, but there were other times when we were right in his face and he made the shots."

The Indians, benefiting from a flurry of Carmi turnovers midway through the opening period, held their biggest lead at 15-5. Carmi trimmed the margin to 17-14 at the first stop but LHS scored the first eight points of the second quarter to again assume control. Brady Benson's 3-pointer 5:20 before halftime gave LHS its biggest lead of the night, 25-14.

Brown's first buzzer-beater, at halftime, pulled the Bulldogs to within 29-28 and provided a big momentum boost. It started a 13-0 run, from which the Tribe never fully recovered.

Brown scored the last four points in the Carmi spree and gave the Bulldogs a 38-29 lead with a basket three minutes into the second half.

Thanks to some good work by sophomore reserve Benson, the Indians were able to keep things close. Benson contributed a three-point play, then hit a 15-footer late in the third period which pulled LHS to within 42-41.

Brown again rose to the occasion. After Brown missed the front end of a one-and-one with nine seconds remaining, the Bulldogs came up with the offensive rebound. They worked the ball to Brown, whose baseline 3-pointer at the horn put Carmi on top 45-41 entering the final period.

Every time the Indians would rally down the stretch, Brown provided the answer from beyond the arc.

A 3-pointer by Brandt Cochran and a hoop by Dylan Volkman pulled LHS to within 51-48 two minutes into the final period, but Brown countered with a triple.

Jordan Shick's three-point play cut the lead to 57-54 midway through the period, but Brown again responded with another 3-pointer. He totaled 13 points in the final period, connecting three times on 3-pointers while being perfect in four trips to the foul line.

Cochran finished with 12 points - including eight in the final period - to lead the Indians. Benson and Volkman both added 10. Harry Loeb added nine, Jordan Shick eight, Bryce Winningham seven and Cody Steffey six to round out the LHS attack.

Volkman and Steffey, a pair of sophomores, were put into the starting lineup in hopes of giving the team a defensive boost.

It worked early, as the Bulldogs turned the ball over six times in the opening quarter, on the way to 16 in the game.

"We really thought that would be the difference because those are two of our best defensive players," said Bishop. "Early in the game it really worked out. I thought we put a lot of pressure on their guards early."

Brown had help from Andy Vaughn, who scored 12 points, and Jordan Large, who netted 10.

Rebounding was a big factor in the Bulldogs' favor. Carmi held a 28-16 advantage on the glass with nine offensive boards.

The loss was the ninth in a row in post-season games for the Indians, who have not won a regional contest since 2006.

Carmi, seeded fourth in the six-team tournament, will take on top-seeded host Mt. Carmel at 7 p.m. tonight in semifinal play. Third-seeded Flora - a 74-51 winner over McLeansboro in Monday's other opening-round tilt - will tangle with second-seeded Fairfield in Wednesday's 7 p.m. semifinal. The survivors will meet at 7 p.m. Friday for the title.
