Big inning lifts Carmi past Salukis
CARMI - Homestanding Carmi used a seven-run third to pull away for a 12-2 win over Red Hill High School's baseball team Thursday.

The game was stopped due to the 10-run rule after the host Bulldogs (4-0) scored twice in the bottom of the sixth.

"We had one poor inning when our defense couldn't make the play to get us out of it," said first-year Red Hill coach Daniel Marsh, after his team saw its record fall to 1-1.

The home team scored single runs in the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead.

The Salukis tied the game with two runs in the third. Jacob Wirth delivered a two-out single to drive home the only Red Hill runs of he game.

Blake Adams doubled for the Salukis' only extra-base hit of the game.

"A strong wind blew in from right field and knocked every fly ball down," Marsh said. "We didn't adjust to that offensively."

Marsh noted that the Salukis cut down on their strikeouts and did a good job of putting the ball in play.

"But we couldn't come up with timely hits," he said.

Tanner Gray was the Salukis' starting pitcher and lasted 2 2/3 innings. He took the loss, allowing eight runs, three of which were earned. Carmi got to Gray for five hits, while the sophomore hurler walked four and fanned two.

Wirth pitched the final three innings for the Salukis, giving up four runs, three of which were earned. He gave up seven hits, walked two batters and struck out four.

The Salukis are slated to travel to Hutsonville on Thursday for a Little Illini Conference encounter.
