High school baseball
Indians make it three in a row
CLAY CITY - Thomas Mahrenholz pitched six strong innings Tuesday, and Lawrenceville High School's baseball team used a four-run fifth inning to pull away to an 8-2 win over homestanding Clay City.

The win was the third in a row for the Indians, who upped their record to 3-1.

Mahrenholz limited the Wolves to two hits through six innings. He allowed single runs in each of the first two innings as the Wolves took a 2-1 lead.

After walking a batter in the seventh, Mahrenholz was lifted in favor of Austin DeLoriea. DeLoriea also walked a hitter, but got out of the inning unscathed.

"DeLoriea came in in the seventh and threw strikes. He got us out of a jam. Both he and Thomas (Mahrenholz) pitched well," LHS coach Bob Gher said.

LHS scored a run in the second, then plated four in the fifth to take command. The Tribe padded the lead with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.

"At the start of the day we were hitting it at them, and they were making the plays," Gher said. "But by the end of the game, we were finding some holes."

Sophomore Dalton Sholders had four hits in as many trips to the plate for the Indians. Ryan Seed, Jacob Seed and Brandy Benson added two hits each, including a double.

The Indians are slated to host Fairfield at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. They're slated to begin Little Illini Conference play Thursday with a home game against Cumberland.
