High school softball
Robinson slugs way past Salukis
BRIDGEPORT - Robinson's Sonnie Givens put her team in control with a three-run homer Friday afternoon, then sent what few fans who'd braved the frigid, windy conditions home with a two-run shot to end the game.

The Maroons, who were visitors on the field but the home team on the scoreboard, tallied at least once in every inning but the first on the way to a 14-3 win over Red Hill High School's softball team. The game was stopped by the 10-run rule after Givens hit her second round-tripper in the sixth inning. The game was supposed to be played at Robinson, but was moved to Red Hill's Westall Field because the diamond was playable.

Robinson (2-3) trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the third inning, but scored nine runs on seven hits and with the help of three Red Hill errors. Givens provided the big hit, a three-run clout to right field, making the score 5-2 in Robinson's favor.

Brittany Fiscus, who gave up six runs, four of which were earned, while pitching into the third inning, took the loss for Red Hill. Fiscus walked two batters, fanned one and allowed five hits.

Cheyanne Moan pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief and gave up five runs, only one of which was earned. Moan surrendered four hits, walked three and fanned none.

Marissa Roark pitched the rest of the way and allowed three runs, all earned. Roark gave up four hits while walking and striking out one.

Robinson Pitcher Kirby Mendenhall scattered four hits over four innings and earned the win. Mendenhall gave up three runs, all earned, walked one and fanned two. Parker Corder turned in an impressive two-inning stint in relief, as she allowed the Salukis no hits while fanning two.

Red Hill (2-3) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Andi Tennis doubled and scored on a ground ball by Fiscus. In the third inning, Red Hill claimed a 2-1 lead. Leah Ramsaran singled, then stole second and third. Ramsaran crossed the plate when she pulled off a nice double-steal with Moan, who had walked. Red Hill's final run came in the fourth, when Maran Tennis doubled and Andi Tennis - who had two hits for the Salukis - followed with a base hit.

The Salukis are slated to entertain county rival Lawrenceville today.
