North Knox outslugs Tribe, 15-7 at Unit 20

LTC holding volleyball tryouts 
ROBINSON - Area women interested in playing volleyball at Lincoln Trail College will have a chance to tryout for the team.

  College officials said head coach Kristin Selph will offer open tryouts for the team from 1-3 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Lincoln Trail College Sports Center.

The tryouts are open to students that will be freshmen or sophomores at Lincoln Trail College or who would like to attend Lincoln Trail College.

  "This is a great opportunity for anyone that wants to play college volleyball," said Selph. "I'm looking for players that are willing to put in the work to help grow the Lady Statesmen. We also want players that are going to be strong students and leaders on and off the court."

Parkview baseball meeting set for Wednesday
LAWRENCEVILLE - A meeting for prospective Parkview Junior High School baseball players and parents is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the school's cafeteria.

Coach Jeremy Sanders said the meeting is for anyone interested in playing baseball. For more information, or if you cannot attend the meeting, call Sanders at 928-1503.

Lawrence County All-Stars fall in finals
OLNEY - The Lawrence County All-Stars were eliminated from the 10-year-old District 1 Tournament after reaching the championship.

In the double-elimination affair, host Olney downed Lawrence County 15-3 to claim the title with a spotless 4-0 record.

Both teams collected eight hits, however a difference in the game was that Lawrence County pitchers issued 11 walks.

For Lawrence County, Dawson Holtz had a double and two singles while Drevin Sanders had two singles. Leyton Ivers doubled and Ethan Smith and Peyton Ray collected singles.

Lawrence County ended tournament play at 2-2 with wins over Mount Carmel and Salem and two losses to Olney.

The Olney All-Stars now advance to the Section/State Tournament.

Football camp begins Monday
LAWRENCEVILLE - The Lawrenceville Junior Football League will be putting on a football camp sponsored by the Fullbackers Club starting Monday.

Organizers said the camp will be Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Cost is $30.

The camp will cover instruction on technique and fundamentals for all positions for all levels. Days will be broken down by positions and groups will be assigned by experience level, from beginner to eighth grade. All campers will receive instruction at every position.

Lawrence County All-Stars fall
LAWRENCEVILLE - There was no suspense on the opening night of play at the Illinois District 1 12-year-old All-Star Tournament on the diamond in Lawrenceville City Park Thursday.

After the opening games were delayed one day by heavy rains, things got under way Thursday with a pair of blowouts that were settled by the 10-run rule.

In the opening game of the four-team tournament, Mount Carmel blanked Salem, 10-0. In the final game of the night, Olney handled the host Lawrence County team, 13-0.

Scrimmages, tryouts set for PJHS softball team
LAWRENCEVILLE - Parkview Junior High School's softball team will hold scrimmages from 8 until 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, and July 20 and 22 at Phil Alsman Memorial Field, according to coach Jerica Zanton.

A parents meeting is set for 5 p.m. July 21 in the PJHS cafeteria.

Zanton says tryouts will be from 8 until 10:30 a.m., July 27 and 28.

Salukis' Holtz chosen to play in WVCA All-Star game
TERRE HAUTE, Indiana - Tristan Holtz will put on a football helmet one last time later this week.

A 2015 Red Hill High School graduate, Holtz will play for the Black Team Saturday in the annual Wabash Valley Coaches Association All-Star football game. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. EST at Memorial Stadium on the campus of Indiana State University.

Holtz is the only Lawrence County player who will play in this year's contest. Lawrenceville High School is no longer a member of the WVFCA.

Six Indians, six Salukis make up 2015 all-county team
LAWRENCEVILLE - Six athletes from both Lawrence County high schools have been chosen for the Daily Record's All-Lawrence County Spring Sports team.

This is the second year that the newspaper has chosen an all-county team from the sports of baseball, softball and boys and girls track.

Three players each were selected from the sports of baseball and softball. In addition three runners were chosen from both boys and girls track.

Lawrenceville native Manley hangs on for title
LAWRENCEVILLE - Zach Manley doesn't play a lot of golf these days, but he obviously remembers his way around the course at Lawrence County Country Club.

A 2009 graduate of Lawrenceville High School who now lives in Terre Haute, Indiana, Manley shot a 4-under-par score of 140 over the weekend to claim the championship in the Albright Motors Lawrence County Open.

Three from county make All-LIC first team
FLORA - Three Lawrence County players have earned first-team All-Little Illini Conference for their exploits on the diamond this spring.

Lawrenceville High School senior Amarae Miller was one of 18 players chosen for the first team in softball while a pair of Lawrence County juniors - Lawrenceville's Jordan Shick and Red Hill's Dalton Murray - made the first team in baseball.

RHHS junior runs in state meet
Red Hill High School junior Lance Holmes participated in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles at the Illinois High School Association Class A track and field finals Thursday in Charleston.

Holmes ran his second-fastest time ever, 42.10 seconds, but failed to qualify for Saturday's championship race. Holmes placed fifth in a field of nine in Thursday's heat at O'Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University. Holmes would have had to run 40.84 to claim one of the nine spots in Saturday's finals.

Salukis' Lance Holmes moves on in hurdles
LAWRENCEVILLE - Red Hill High School junior Lance Holmes is the last man standing, in regard to track and field.

Holmes was the only Lawrence County runner to advance Thursday, from Illinois High School Association sectional meet at Ed Loeb Field, to next week's state finals in Charleston.

Holmes, who will be running at the finals for the second consecutive season, place second in the 300 intermediate hurdles on Thursday, in 41.73 seconds.

Salukis' Western, Indians' Holmes move on
NEWTON - Two Lawrence County athletes will participate against the best of the best later this week, at the Illinois High School Association Class A track and field finals. Lawrenceville High School senior Heather Holmes will be making her first trip to Charleston in the 1,600-meter run while Red Hill High School junior Jamesha Western will return in both the discus and shot put.

Both qualified for the finals with their showing in sectional competition hosted by Newton High School on Friday. The sectional meet was twice delayed by weather, for nearly two hours in all.

Tribe completes season sweep of Salukis
BRIDGEPORT - Regional play may be looming for Lawrence County's high school baseball teams, but first there was a county battle to settle.

Lawrenceville used a five-run fourth-inning to seize control on Thursday then held off county rival Red Hill, 7-5, at the Tank Farm.

It was the regular season finale for the Salukis of coach Dan Marsh, who finished with a 6-15 mark. Lawrenceville improved to 9-12 and is slated to play at 11 a.m. Saturday at Paris. Both teams will take part in Illinois High School Association regional play next week.

Red Hill Junior High runs well in meet at Effingham
EFFINGHAM - Fourteen Red Hill Junior High School track and field participants advanced from Illinois Elementary School Association sectional competition to the Class A state finals with their performances last Saturday.

The Class A state finals will take place in East Peoria this weekend.

Lawrenceville teams romp past Clay City
LAWRENCEVILLE - Lawrenceville High School's baseball and softball teams both snapped losing streaks Friday by clubbing visiting Clay City.

At Unit 20 Ballpark, the Indians' baseball team snapped a five-game losing streak by thumping the Wolves, 19-3. At Phil Alsman Memorial Field, Lawrenceville's softball team whipped Clay City, 12-2, to end a five-game skid.

Both games ended after Clay City batted in the top of the fifth, due to the 10-run rule.

BRIDGEPORT - Red Hill High School's softball team squandered good scoring opportunities in each of the final three innings Tuesday, in a 3-2 loss to visiting Oblong.
